The motorhome is parked at Mary’s home in Murphys, California. I’m planning to depart here tomorrow. While here I’m performing routine maintenance on both vehicles.

 

 

 

 

 

Today… A trip down memory lane!

 

 

 

2004 Central America trip…

This trip ended up being 343 days and 16,000+ miles through the back-country of Mexico, Belize, Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Costa Rica and Panama. 11 rigs started the trip, within a week we broke into three smaller groups for ease of traveling. Only myself and one other rig went the full, pre-planned route. All the others dropped out for various reasons. All returned safely to the United States. I’m planning to show these photos, more or less, 10 a day, whenever I’m not doing something else deserving a blog entry. FINALLY, it must be remembered these photos are prior to my switching to digital in 2006. The films were developed during our trip and the lack of quality control sometimes is plainly evident.

 

Today…Mexico (north-bound) 12…

 

 

 

 

 

The motorhome is in Oaxaca, awaiting a new engine. I had no idea that it would take two months. In the meantime we explore Oaxaca, one of the most beautiful cities in Mexico. In our two months there…we got to know it well…

 

We took a one-half hour bus ride to the unique ruins Monte Alban. Rather then being Mayan, these ruins are of the Zapotec Indian culture. Founded around 500 AD, it flourished until about 750 AD, and had about 25,000 inhabitants. It’s situated atop a mountain and we enjoyed a beautiful 360 degree view of the City of Oaxaca and the valleys below…

My current travel rig is a 2006 Fleetwood 26′ Class A Motorhome and a towed 1986 Ford Bronco II, Eddie Bauer Model. This photo was taken in the desert at Slab City near Niland, California…

This trip ended up being 343 days and 16,000+ miles through the back-country of Mexico, Belize, Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Costa Rica and Panama. 11 rigs started the trip, within a week we broke into three smaller groups for ease of traveling. Only myself and one other rig went the full, pre-planned route. All the others dropped out for various reasons. All returned safely to the United States. I’m planning to show these photos, more or less, 10 a day, whenever I’m not doing something else deserving a blog entry. FINALLY, it must be remembered these photos are prior to my switching to digital in 2006. The films were developed during our trip and the lack of quality control sometimes is plainly evident.

While waiting for the mechanic to do his work, Bud and I took the Bronco on a day-trip to the village of Santiago Matatlan, which proudly proclaims itself as “The Mezcal Capital Of The World”! Mescal is a liquor prepared from the heart of the mature agave plants about 12 years old…

The mechanic got me running again. On the road again, heading for Oaxaca. to a garage recommended by the last garage, so Bud could get some work done that the last garage could not do. Along the way, I was carefully watching my oil pressure and water coolant temperature gauges to make sure everything was okay. After we had gone about 20 miles, I started hearing a knocking sound in my engine, which got louder as we progressed. I’m getting the feeling that I’m about to have another, and this time a major and expensive, cultural experience with a Mexican garage! I was right!!! I was told I needed a new engine and so the work began…

 

 

 

I’ve got a big hole in my life…where the engine used to be…

 

 

 

Here it sits in many pieces. Getting a new engine will prove to be a major problem and I did not know it at this time, but we will be in Oaxaca two months before moving on once again…

 

 

 

Fortunately Oaxaca is one of the most beautiful cities in Mexico. Many banners can be seen at…

We have moved on to Chiapa De Corzo, population about 60,000 and an elevation of about 1,500 feet, which means we are back in the heat and humidity…

This man’s family has been hand-carving beautiful wooden figures for more than 100 years…

 

 

 

This mural shows the Indians hurling themselves into the Sumidero Canyon rather than face Spanish conquest rule…

Back on the road after leaving Santo Domingo Tehuantepec. While climbing a steep grade in the beautiful Sierra Madre Mountains, I heard a loud pop! Looking under the motorhome front end, I could see oil everywhere. I knew this was not going to be a good happening! Since I was not in a particularly safe spot, Bud, with his noisy, smelly diesel came to my rescue. We hitch up a tow rope and he towed my motorhome and Bronco about one-half mile further up the hill, where we were both safely off the roadway.

Here’s what I found out, after inspection of the problem. The tip of one of the blades of the engine cooling fan broke off, exited through the bottom of the engine fan shroud, and then cut through a wire mesh hose which feeds the oil to the radiator to cool the engine oil. Talk about bad luck! Just one inch more, the broken fan blade tip would have missed the oil line, and I wouldn’t have a major problem. Here’s what we decided to do…Bud and I will spend the night on the side of the road. Bob will go on to the next sizable village/town, and send a tow truck to a mechanic next morning. The tow truck towed me to the town of Tlacolula de Matamoras. The tow of 19 miles took about one hour. This was to prove to be the beginning of a “Major Cultural Experience!”
