Jefferson County International Airport – Port Townsend, Washington

Mary is no longer available for RV traveling, but we remain good friends.
Because we have 4,000+ postings, I’ve invited her to continue posting entries on this blog.
I’m currently in my 21st year of full-time RVing and my lifestyle is changing, For more info click Here

——————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————-

The motorhome is parked at Thousand Trails RV Resort in La Connor, Washington. I’ll depart here August 30th. I’ve been here a number of times in past years.

I’ll be hanging out in this general area until about the beginning of October, taking maximum advantage of my Thousand Trails membership and very agreeable weather.

(Note: I’m currently a little discombobulated right now. My normal mode is to blog what I experienced yesterday. Right now, I’m a number of blogs behind my experiences. I expect to be back in my normal mode in about a month.)

Today’s subject…

About one month ago while in Port Townsend, I visited the Jefferson County International Airport. It’s the smallest international airport I’ve ever seen. A local told me it can be called an international airport is because you can actually get a commercial flight on Island Air into Canada, a mere 30 miles distant.

A Brief Overview Of A Ramblin’ Mans Life…

The motorhome is parked at Thousand Trails RV Resort in Las Vegas, Nevada. My scheduled departure date is Friday, February 13th.

Mary continues to be overwhelmed with personal business. I am now not expecting to see her again until I arrive at her home in Murphys, California about the third week in April. It’s just the way things are and we just have to deal with it.

I’ve come to Las Vegas, Nevada several times over the years and have quite thoroughly explored the area. Rather than go back to these various places and re-create the wheel, (unless I do something different and unusual) I’m electing to republish some of my earlier blog entries…or discuss a different topic.

Yesterday I published a Blog entry about my son and the bad weather to which he was returning… http://wp.me/pDCku-bCP

It got me thinking about why I left the northeastern United States and continue my Ramblin’ Mans lifestyle. So here’s a brief recap of my almost 75 years of life and 50+ years of camping and RVing…starting at the beginning…

I never had a chance…by that I mean I was born December 5, 1940 in Gardner, Massachusetts. Right smack in the middle of the Sagittarius sign. If you study the character traits of that sign you will find that a primary trait is that they…Love To Travel!

img070a

I lived in Massachusetts until I went to US Navy Boot Camp late 1958.

Here’s a photo at age 18 just after arriving home from boot camp…

img102

Most of my 3.5 years in the US Navy was as a Radarman on the USS Boston CAG-1, the World’s first heavy guided missile cruiser…http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_Boston_%28CA-69%29

That’s when my traveling life really began. I made cruises to the North Atlantic, Mediterranean Sea and the Caribbean Sea visiting a number of different countries. The below photo was taken in Amsterdam, Holland for the cruise book in 1961 when I was 20 years old…

Sailor HJ Jaillet 1961

I began my RVing/Camping life in 1964 when I bought an old International bread truck and converted it into a camper. I had it painted a beautiful metallic green with golden scribe letters that said…The Weekend Wanderer. Unfortunately, no photos remain of that camper. I had it several years and really cannot remember quite when or to whom I eventually sold it. In 1970 I bought a motorcycle and it became my camper. The next photo is what it looked liked in 1977 went I took it to Newfoundland, Canada for a three-week vacation…

img197

I traveled extensively all over the east coast and went absolutely everywhere…going to the good places several times over. Needing new horizons I decided to move to the west coast (California). My motorcycle was in the moving van with my household furnishings. I drove in my 1977 Toyota Celica with my tent…

img122

It took me three months to make it to California. See the below image. Most folks would have gone more or less in a straight line (yellow line). But not me. Leaving northern New Jersey where I was living at the time in 1979, I drove to visit some good friends near Detroit, Michigan, then north into Canada to the head of the Canadian Rockies..Banff and Lake Louise. Then I stared zig-zaging south down the Rocky Mountain chain. Every time I found a route over the Rockies, I took it, then crossed at the next available crossover all the way south to the Grand Canyon (red line) and then into southern California…

nalargez

I took a year off from work, then ended up taking a job near Olympia, Washington in 1980. By that time I had acquired a tent trailer, but that was not suitable in the wet northwest environment…so I bought a used 11 foot travel trailer which I had for several years. In 1988 I bought a new 18 foot travel trailer which I towed with a Chevy Suburban.

I traveled extensively in the Pacific Northwest. In 1995 as I was approaching the age of 55…I made a rather relatively quick decision to retire and begin the full-time RVing lifestyle and headed south for the winter. Since that time my primary goal has been to stay in temperatures from 65 to 75 degrees all year long, as much as possible. Mary calls me The Weather Wimp! When it gets over 75 or under 65…I start complaining!

The next photo is of my 18 foot travel trailer and Chevy Suburban on a beach in Baja, California Sur where I spent 6 months during the winter of 1998-99. The poor photo quality comes having the film developed in Mexico…

Can't get much closer to the water than that!

Christmas in Baja, Mexico…

img228

My friends had motorhomes and a tow car so they could go 4-wheeling in the mountains. I was time for me to make a change in that direction. By that time I was reading all I could about Central America…knowing I just had to go there. I felt that there was a 50/50 chance the motorhome and tow car make not make it back from Central America…so in September 1999, I bought a 1983 23.5 foot Suncrest motorhome and a 1984 Ford Bronco II as a tow car. In the winter of 2000-01 I spent another six month Winter in Baja, Mexico.

In November, 2002 I made the final decision to go to Central America. I set aside more than a year for planning and departed on January 2, 2004 with a total of 11 rigs and 17 people…

#2

After 343 days and more than 16,000 miles (11,000+ on the motorhome and 5,000+ on the Bronco) …only two rigs and two people went the entire pre-planned route. All the others dropped out for various reasons…but all eventually returned to the United States safely.

We wandered a lot of back-country roads in Central America…

We crossed many bridges like this one during our trip.

The next photo taken on December 9, 2004 in Douglas, Arizona shows myself (right) and Bud Kuball safely arriving back in the United States…

#1156

Through a great coincidence…Bud lives here in Las Vegas and I’ll be visiting with him soon. In October, 2008 I met my now (part-time) traveling companion Mary Matzek and my life has not been the same since… 🙂 …

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

In July, 2009 we bought a new rig…a 2006 26 foot Fleetwood Terra Motorhome and 1986 Ford Bronco II tow car as seen in the heading of this Blog. Since 2008 we have wandered all over the United States making two circumnavigations (2010 and 2012-13).

In that time we’ve had some unique experiences. May 27th, 2012 we survived this terrible accident in Canyon de Chelly in remote northeastern Arizona where one person was killed and several other were severely injured. Mary and I still carry aches and pains from that experience…

DSC07201

In February 2013 we met the Mayor of Lake Charles, Louisiana while there for Mardi Gras. Mary and I are both of French heritage. We managed to find the French folks there and got an invite to ride on the Krewe de Cajun float during the Mardi Gras Parade. Instead of catching the beads…we were throwing them… 🙂

104

The below map identifies six extremities I have reached on the North American Continent. #1 by motorcycle, #2 by Toyota and #3, #4, #5 and #6 by motorhome. In case you are wondering why I’ve not done Alaska…it doesn’t call me.

Salt Creek Campground Near Joyce, Washington

Yesterday I drove the 35 miles from Sequim to Salt Creek Campground about 15 miles west of Port Angeles, Washington. We will depart later this morning.

The below Google Earth image shows our camping location marked by the “X”. Through our front windshield we can see Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada 10 miles across the Strait of Juan DeFuca…

At 7:33 PM was a most unusual happening…

In all my 50 years of RVing this has never happened. The camp host stood atop a small rise and with his Bugle sounded the most beautiful TAPS I’ve ever heard in my life. The whole campground came to a stop. Mary happened to be outside and took this photo…

I took the time to meet Bill “Bubba” Hughes, an ex-Marine who told me he has been doing this for a number of years. Thanks for your service, Bill!

The Three Musketeers Reunite!

The motorhome is parked at Thousand Trails RV Resort at La Conner, Washington where I recently spent three weeks. Our departure from here is scheduled for August 19th.

Yesterday the Three Musketeers had their first-ever meeting on the west coast. Last meeting was 14 years ago on the east coast.

It all started, when as a child, my family moved to Revere, Massachusetts…five miles north of Boston in 1950. It was then I met Bil Gallagher and Al Penta and we became fast friends. Everywhere one was seen it was sure the other two were somewhere nearby. The first below photo is of our fifth grade graduation in 1951. Bill is upper left…Al is lower right and I’m third from right in the lower line…

As always you may left click upon an image to see an enlarged view and then click once again to see an even larger view…

img068

We remained close friends until Al and I went off to join the U.S. Navy (at separate times) and Bill went off the college.

Our next meeting was not to occur until 1991 in Revere when I was on the east coast for my son’s wedding. Al just happened to be there visiting family at that time and Bill drove down from his then home in Vermont to meet up with us. In this photo Al is on the left, Bill middle and I’m on the right…

035

Our next meeting was not to occur until 2000, once again in Revere. Al and I were both back in the area visiting family and friends…once again Bill drove down to meet us. In this photo Bill is left, I’m middle and Al is right…

img058

And yesterday in 2014, we had our first-ever meeting on the west coast at Mt. Vernon, Washington. Bill, who is semi-retired, had a business meeting in Vancouver, B,C., Canada and had to go right by us to get back to Sea-Tac Airport south of Seattle. Al drove in from his home in Monroe about one hour away. Mary and I drove in from our camping location in La Conner…about a 20 minute drive. We met at the Skagit Valley Food Co-op Restaurant and enjoyed a great 2.5 hour reunion. In this photo, I’m left, Bill middle and Al is right…

DSC08066 (Copy)-1

All things considered for our advanced ages…we are still in pretty decent condition. Part of our discussions yesterday was identifying long ago school friends who have already passed away. We all are hoping this will not be our final reunion!

Recently I had a telephone conversation with the VA Hospital at Palo Alto California regarding my cataract surgery. Pre-operation examination and consultation is set for September 29th…surgery on October 9th.

Yesterday was a cloudy/sunny/rainy at 68 degrees. Forecast for today is cloudy/sunny/rainy and 68 degrees.

Peace Arch Park – Blaine, Washington

The motorhome is parked at Thousand Trails Birch Bay RV Resort in Blaine, Washington. This location marks the furthest northern most point of our planned 2014 travels. I’ve been here several times over the years and always enjoy the area. Our departure date is set at August 12th.

The day before yesterday I drove the Bronco the 5 miles to Peace Arch Park in Blaine, Washington so we could do some photography. We were here the same time of the year in 2009. There are actually to parks…one in Washington and the other in British Columbia, Canada. The peace arch is right on the border line with lots of pretty flowers on both sides.

A Look From Above Of My Current Location…

The motorhome is parked at Thousand Trails RV Resort along the shore of Skagit Bay in LaConner, Washington. I’ve been here a number of times over the past years and always enjoy it here. It’s my favorite resort in the entire Thousand Trails system. My departure date is July 29th.

Mary is at home tending to personal matters…home maintenance, family, friends, rentals, etc..  She has made her flight reservations to meet me July 29th in Bellingham, Washington.

Here’s a different way to look at things thanks to Google Earth. The pin marks my location…

As always you may left click upon an image to see an enlarged view and then click once again to see an even larger view…

In this first view the large body of water coming in from the left and the Pacific Ocean is the  Strait de Juan DeFuca. Highway 1 is in Canada. The San Juan Islands are high center…

1

A little closer view. Anacortes is about 12 miles away and where you can get on the ferry to the San Juan Islands and to Canada. The green triangle below Anacortes is Mount Erie…

2

Closer again shows my location on Skagit Bay…

3

And still closer. The rectangular shape that looks like a very large raft is the Swinomiish Indian Salmon farming pens…

4

Finally a photo I took several years ago from Mount Erie of Fidalgo Island…five miles to the northwest. At 1,273 feet it’s the highest elevation in the area…

I HOPE YOU ENJOYED THE PHOTOS.
