Natchez, Mississippi Day 5 (GA436)

Mary is no longer available for RV traveling, but we remain good friends.
Because we have 5,000+ postings, I’ve invited her to continue posting entries on this blog.
I’m currently in my 23rd year of full-time RVing and my lifestyle is changing, For more info click Here

The motorhome is parked at Thousand Trails RV Resort in Bow, Washington. I’ll depart here tomorrow.

Since my RVing life is changing (see above), I’m starting to re-visit previously visited places. So rather than constantly re-blogging past entries, I’ve decided to do something different.

This entry was posted March 23, 2013…

Note: Mary flew from Baton Rouge Airport, Louisiana on March 12 to her home in California. I’m hoping to get her back with me by mid-April. My current plans are to drift SLOWLY north along the Mississippi River to Memphis, Tennessee where I’ll then turn northeast heading for New England for the Summer. Can’t go north too fast because it’s still cold up there! The Mississippi River is rich in history…I expect it to be an interesting passage.

The motorhome is still parked at the Loyal Order of Moose Lodge #1662 in Natchez, Mississippi.

Natchez remained mostly undamaged from the Civil War. Hence this old city with its narrow and many one-way streets remains a beautiful city. To read about Natchez, click this link…

Next, with assistance of the above three ladies, I was able to get an invite to the Jerry Lee Lewis Museum just six blocks away. It has been closed in recent times due to the death of a close family member. This is a living museum…by that I mean it’s in the Lewis Family home with Jerry Lee’s younger sister Frankie Jean still residing there…

Jean, from the museum who had not been there before, and I spent a wonderful two-hours there as she explained many of the mementos. She is truly one unforgettable lady…it’s hard to picture her and Jerry Lee in the same room!!!!  🙂

As we entered Vermillion Ville we were followed by August Broussard, one of Louisiana’s most famous Cajun musicians. Broussard, 64, plays the accordion, guitar, steel guitar, harmonica and fiddle. He has been playing the traditional style of Cajun music professionally for over 35 years. He was accompanied by his student, 17-year-old Darien Fontaine. We had previously met August Broussard while in Lake Charles during Mardi Gras about a month ago. To read more about August Broussard, the living legend, click this link…

we were parked in Mamou, Louisiana. Shortly after the doors opened 7:30 AM Mary and I enter Fred’s Lounge…the Cajun Music Capital of the World!

Fred’s is in its 67th year of business with continuous live radio broadcasts for the last 51 years. It is only open Saturday’s from 7:30 AM until 2:00 PM.

The Cajun band played really loud and really good music and combined with really friendly people made for a really good time. Despite my aching right hip which remains from last year’s may 27th accident, Mary and I enjoyed a couple of dances together. It was a most enjoyable morning!

Since we needed to drive the motorhome to Eunice, we left Fred’s about 11:00 AM. After lunch we drove the motorhome about 10 miles south where we parked in the rear parking lot of a fire station…

Mamou, Louisiana – The Cajun Music Capital Of The World! (GA414)

Mary is no longer available for RV traveling, but we remain good friends.

This entry was posted March 2, 2013…

Yesterday we drove the motorhome the about 25 miles from Chicot State Park to Mamou, Louisiana…the Cajun Music Capital Of The World!

Along the way we stopped in Ville Platte at the Swamp Pop Music Museum which is only open on Fridays and Saturdays.

Swamp pop is a musical genre indigenous to the Acadiana region of south Louisiana and an adjoining section of southeast Texas. Created in the 1950s and early 1960s by teenaged Cajuns and black Creoles, it combines New Orleans-style rhythm and blues, country and western, and traditional French Louisiana musical influences.

The next stop is unusual for us as it is a repeat. That usually does not happen. We were here in 2010 and had a ball! As long as we are in the area…we just had to come back. Over the years…I believe this is my fourth visit.

Upon arrival in Mamou we pulled the motorhome alongside of Fred’s Lounge – The Cajun Music Capital of the World! Fred’s is only open on Saturday’s from 7:30 AM to 2:00 PM. We lucked with our timing as Taunte (aunt in French) Sue was just coming out of the back door. Luckily she remembered me from my previous visits. Asking if we could park overnight where we were…she said no…she had a better spot at another of her properties about one block away. We followed her and the below photo shows our parking location complete with 30 amp electrical hookup…

As usual, here’s the dinette window view…

After getting settled in, we took a walk to the Cajun Music Plaza…directly across the street from Fred’s Lounge…

On the same wall is the Cajun Wall Of Fame…

Did you notice that of the 12 people shown…only one is a woman? Nonetheless than Taunte Sue! She has lived all of her 82 years in Mamou…

023

Taunte Sue was married to Fred Tate…of Fred’s Lounge which you can read about by clicking this link…
http://www.fredsociety.com/mamou.html

She recently retired after 55 years working there. You can read about her career by clicking this link…

We’ve got to leave shortly as Fred’s opens its doors at 7:30 AM and we want to be first in the line. The drinking starts and by 8:00 AM the place is packed by time the band starts playing at 8:00 AM…nonstop until 1:30 PM. I’ll have a Miller Lite…Thanks!

We’ll share with you our adventures of this morning in tomorrow’s Blog posting.

Mamou, Louisiana

The motorhome is parked at Thousand Trails South Jetty RV Resort in Florence, Oregon. Mary has returned from her trip to Turkey and is home resting and editing the many photos she took while there. I’m expecting her to catch up with me on the Oregon Coast around May 21st.

A more relaxed mode..

After our 682 day on-the-go 2011-2013 circumnavigation of the United States, we have decided to slip into a more relaxed mode. In the next few months we will be traveling through areas previously explored. Unless we do something unusual, this Blog will feature a photo album from the circumnavigation and will change daily.

Duson, Louisiana

If you remember yesterday’s Blog entry http://wp.me/pDCku-7ea

we were parked in Eunice, Louisiana. We were here in 2010 and had such a good time at the Liberty Theater…we just had to come back since we were in the area.

Normally it’s two-hours of great Cajun Music and dancing. When we put it on our schedule…we had no idea this weekend’s program was a tribute to Hank Williams, Sr. which you can read all about by clicking this link…
http://www.theadvertiser.com/article/20130301/LIFESTYLE/303010308/Tribute-keeps-legacy-Hank-Williams-alive

Much to our pleasant surprise three of our new friends from Lake Charles were also there. Ranola, Sue and Cliff…

Here are some photos that I took…

As always you may left click upon an image to see an enlarged view and then click once again to see an even larger view…

I just love the delightful Cajun accent. You can hear Ranola’s by clicking this link…

The program featured the Jambalaya Cajun Band with four performers doing Hank Williams songs.

The program opened with Hugh Harris…the youngest of the four…and closest to Hank’s death age…29…

And 81 year-old D.L. Menard…

It ended up being a great program which we all  enjoyed!

Yesterday we drove the motorhome the about 40 miles southeast to Duson only a few miles from Lafayette, Louisiana.

Along the way we passed through the City of Rayne…Frog Capital of the World! To read why Rayne claims this title, click this link…

Here’s a photo of Mary standing next to a 12 foot-high frog seen as you enter the city…

They have frogs all around the city. Here are a few…

In Duson we ended up parking at VFW Post #9822 where we expect to stay while we explore the nearby area for the next 2-3 days. Sunday Bingo draws a big crowd…

039

As usual, here’s the dinette window shot…

After a long, full day on Saturday we enjoyed a peaceful and relaxing Sunday afternoon. Back to work today…seeing the sights!
