13th Annual Binacional Cabalgata – Columbus, New Mexico (GA46)

Mary is no longer available for RV traveling, but we remain good friends.
Because we have 4,000+ postings, I’ve invited her to continue posting entries on this blog.
I’m currently in my 22nd year of full-time RVing and my lifestyle is changing, For more info click Here

The motorhome is parked at Thousand Trails San Benito RV Resort, Paicines, California. I’ll depart from here April 19th.

Since my RVing life is changing (see above), I’m starting to re-visit previously visited places. So rather than constantly re-blogging past entries, I’ve decided to do something different.

In 2012-2013, Mary and I did a 682 day, 12,679 miles in the motorhome and 8,000 miles in the Bronco, circumnavigation of the United States, which I called The Great Adventure. I called it so because other than my oldest granddaughter’s high school graduation in June in Connecticut, I didn’t know where we would be going or when we would be there!

So, unless I do something really different and unusual warranting a new blog entry, I’ll be posting entries from that trip.

This entry was posted March 11, 2012…

We are still parked at the Pancho Villa State Park at Columbus, New Mexico.

Yesterday Mary and I attend the above named celebration of Mexican-American friendship held at Columbus, New Mexico.

Here’s a poster in Spanish about the Cabalgata…

We left the motorhome at 9:30 AM when the temperature was a bone-chilling 35 degrees coupled with a 15 miles an hour wind which made for a wind-chill effect of 25 degrees. BRRR!!! Remember me? I’m the guy who likes it between 65-75 degrees!

Are we having fun yet?

Part of the festivities was a bi-national Calvary horse parade. The American riders met the Mexican riders at the border 3 miles away and arrived in Columbus, New Mexico at about 10:00 AM. The festivities were held at the central plaza in the Village of Columbus, New Mexico. I estimate there were about 300 horses in the parade followed by a lot of vehicles that carried the families of the Mexican riders.

Here are some photos that I took throughout the day…

I have spent about two years…driving well in excess 10,000 miles in Mexico. The Mexicans are wonderful and friendly people. They love to party. Find the smallest reason and they will have a party! It’s truly a shame what the drug thing has done to their country…In excess of 45,000 people killed in the last five years. So much so that we now fear to take the motorhome back into Mexico. So, in this case, the Mexicans came to us.

Well, at least I have my photos which help preserve the memories of my travels in Mexico..

Despite the bone-chilling cold, we were both happy we attended this fun event for 2.5 hours. There was also lots of great food.

Spring is about 10 days away…I can hardly wait! The weather is supposedly going to warm back up where it’s supposed to be the week…in the mid-70’s. Hooray!

In other news…

This morning we will move the motorhome about 30 miles north to the Deming, New Mexico area. We hope to get into Rockhound State Park.

Cabalgata Binacionial – Columbus, New Mexico

The motorhome is parked in Mary’s yard at her home at Murphys, California. I plan to depart at 10:00 AM this morning. Mary will fly to meet me in Yuma, Arizona in early January.

DSC07871

My purposes in leaving now are first to escape the soon-to-come much colder weather in Murphys, California. In addition, I have lots of friends in the Yuma area plus I’ll cross into Mexico to visit my dentist for my annual cleaning, refurbish the freon in the Bronco’s air conditioning system and get new prescription eyeglasses.

Yesterday was a mostly sunny day at 67 degrees.  Forecast for today is mostly sunny and 66 degrees. The forecast for tomorrow is a high of only 48 degrees with a real feel of 38. I’m getting out of Dodge just in time!

A more relaxed mode…

After our 682 day on-the-go 2011-2013 circumnavigation of the United States, we have decided to slip into a more relaxed mode. In the next few months we will be traveling through areas previously explored. Unless I do something unusual, this Blog will feature a photo album from the circumnavigation and will change daily.

STORMING TO MODESTO

DSC04095 (Copy)

Karen and I battled a horrific storm all the way to Modesto Toyota to pick up my Prius with its newly installed battery pack.  The winds and blinding rain made it a slow, careful drive.  It was still raining as we pulled in. And, then the bad news. We drove all that way and my car needs a relay switch and won’t be ready for two or three days. Guess what?  We called and were told the car was ready. I was not a happy camper.

The rain abated somewhat as we headed home.

DSC04101 (Copy)

At one point we had to move to the turn lane because the driving lane was completely flooded. The old truck is high off the ground, but it is never safe to drive through deep water. We estimated the depth at seven to 12 inches in some places.

We decided to seize the day and pulled into a Mexican restaurant, Michoachan. The atmosphere and the food were just right. Cheerful and delicious. Wonderful old pictures on the walls, except they are under glass and none of them turned out very well. This one of Pancho Villa was decent and reminded me of our stop in Columbia, New Mexico earlier this year where we enjoyed the Cabalgata. Especially Mexico’s nearby county sheriff dressed like Pancho Villa with his  marvelous saddle horn in his image.

It is interesting that the picture does not load with the correct pixelation, but it loaded fine in the blog of March 10th of this year if you want to visit the Cabalgata in full.
