Mary is no longer available for RV traveling, but we remain good friends.
Because we have 5,000+ postings, I’ve invited her to continue posting entries on this blog.

The motorhome is parked at Thousand Trails Lake Minden RV Resort in Nicolaus, California. I’m scheduled to depart here November 7th.

Yesterday I stumbled upon the fact that Peggy Sue Gerron passed away at 78 years on October 1st.

You remember Peggy Sue whom Buddy Holly sang about so many years ago back in 1957…

I know we all have to go sometime. It got me thinking that in less than six weeks I turn 78…. Hmmmm.

It’s said “only the good die young”… so I guess and hope that means I’ve still got a few more years left in me.  🙂

I hope you enjoyed the photos!

Forecast for today is mostly sunny and 76 degrees.

Mary remains at home in California tending to medical issues.

The motorhome is still parked at the Fraternal Order of Eagles Airee #4271, here in Lubbock, Texas. I expect to leave here this morning.

Yesterday I drove the Bronco about 10 miles to the home of Peggy Sue Gerron. You remember Peggy Sue…she was the girl Buddy Holly sang about back in 1957 when she was a high school senior.

I spent a most enjoyable hour chatting with Peggy Sue about her life. She told me many stories including some of the false stories. For instance…it is said the title of the song was changed from Cindy Lou. Not true says Peggy Sue…there never was a person named Cindy Lou in their families or circle of friends. Back in those days it was popular for guys to sing about their girls such as Donna by Richie Valens and Claudette by the Everly Brothers. Richie Valens was killed in the same plane crash as Buddy Holly in 1959. Buddy was just 22 years old.

Peggy Sue was never Buddy Holly’s girlfriend. She went with and eventually married Jerry Allison, the drummer for The Crickets Band.

Peggy Sue has her own website where you can read all about her…
http://www.peggysueonline.com/

Here are some photos that I took…

As always you may left click upon an image to see an enlarged view and then click once again to see an even larger view…

Peggy Sue with her cat Sox…

Here’s Peggy Sue with a watercolor painting of her when she was 19 or 20 years old…

And a poster from several years ago…

She graciously gave me an autographed copy of her book…

After my visit with Peggy Sue I drove to Radio Station KDAV. It’s called “the Buddy Holly Station” because young Buddy Holly performed in a country show there before he reached stardom…

Then back to the Buddy Holly Center which I wrote about two days ago. The house that Peggy Sue lived in with her husband Jerry Allison was recently moved adjacent to the Buddy Holly Center…

The final stop of the day was in front of the house where Buddy Holly and his family lived when his song “That’ll Be The Day” was #1 in the country…

I could not possibly end this Blog entry without letting you listen to Buddy Holly sing about Peggy Sue…one more time. Just click the link…
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ku5UeUT7yIQ

All in all it was another enjoyable day.

Meeting famous people is another joy in the life of a full-time RVer!

In other news…

Yesterday I bought gas for a cheaper price than I have in a long time…$3.03.9. Then I drove another mile or so and saw several more stations at $2.97.9. Never thought I’d ever see gas at under $3.00 again!

Yesterday I drove the about eight miles to the Buddy Holly Center near downtown Lubbock. The main gallery was very nicely done containing a lot of memorabilia from Buddy’s younger days. However…no photography was allowed. Boo on them  I just do not see what the big deal is with the no photography bit is. I saw nothing in here, that if I took a photo of it and shared it with you, that would make the world come to an end. There were a number of signs reminding you of the photography and video ban. Interesting…

From what I’ve read on the Internet it’s all because of his widow Maria Elana. She owns the rights to his name, image, trademarks, and other intellectual property. It all appears she still profits financially 53 years after his death.

Here’s the official website link…
http://www.buddyhollycenter.org/

Here is a website link about his ex-wife. It states that she “did not attend the funeral and has never visited the grave site”. She also claims that she is protecting his image. There are a number of websites about his widow. Just put Maria Elana Holley in your Internet search box, read for yourself and draw your own conclusions. Interesting…

Buddy Holly And The Crickets (GA281)

NOW THAT I HAVE YOUR ATTENTION, I’LL SHARE WITH YOU THAT…

Mary remains at home in California tending to medical issues.

The motorhome is still parked at the Fraternal Order of Eagles #3245. This was my second day here in Clovis, New Mexico.

Yesterday I drove the Bronco the about one mile to the old Norman Petty Recording Studio at 1313 W. 7th Street. It’s Clovis’s #1 tourist attraction…primarily because this is where Buddy Holly and The Crickets recorded such songs as That’ll Be The Day, Maybe Baby, Every Day, and Peggy Sue. This studio is no longer active. It was last used in 1969 when Norman Petty moved into a larger studio.

The Norman Petty Trio also had a very famous hit song of their own…Mood Indigo.

You can read all about Norman Petty by clicking this Wikipedia informational link…
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Norman_Petty

Here’s a link that will inform you all about the history of the Norman Petty Studio…
http://www.superoldies.com/pettystudios/pettytour.html

Another all-time favorite of mine, country singer Waylon Jennings recorded Jole Blon here. The following is from a Wikipedia article about Waylon Jennings…

In 1958, Buddy Holly arranged Jennings’ first recording session, of “Jolie Blon” and “When Sin Stops (Love Begins)”. Holly hired him to play bass. During the “Winter Dance Party Tour,” in Clear Lake, Iowa, Holly chartered a plane to arrive at the next venue. Jennings gave up his seat in the plane to J. P. Richardson, (The Big Bopper) who was suffering from a cold. The flight that carried Holly, Richardson and Ritchie Valens crashed, on the day later known as The Day the Music Died.

You can listen to Waylon’s first recording from 1958 by clicking the below link. Buddy Holly plays guitar and King Curtis plays the sax. Waylon went on to become a mega country singing star…
http://youtu.be/DQlw8I6sd6g

In addition, Buddy Knox (Party Doll), Roy Orbison (Pretty Woman) and Leann Rimes are among many others that have recorded here. Stepping into the studio is like stepping back in time inside of a time capsule. Kenneth Broad (age 78) provided me with the tour. He is the trustee for the Petty Estate and once was Vi Petty’s minister. He also participated in the production of some of Leann Rimes music. He has been associated with the studio for 30 years and provided endless stories about his time there. One story he told me was they recorded from midnight until dawn because the studio is located on a main road it did away with background vehicle noise and the chances of electric power failures were less. He also added that the studio remains essentially the same as it was in the Buddy Holly days when Buddy Holly had 12 top hits within a 15 month period.

Here are some of the photos that I took…
