My RVing lifestyle is changing, For more info click Here

The motorhome is parked at Thousand Trails RV Resort in Seaside, Oregon. I’ve been here several times before. I plan to depart from here June 15th. I’ll slow my pace and spend the rest of the Summer in the State of Washington.

I’ll be re-publishing past blog entries located within a hour’s drive from my location here in Seaside. This one was last posted June 12, 2009..

Mary and I went to Astoria, Oregon once again yesterday. Among the things we saw/did were…

*Visit the site of Fort Astoria where the first permanent settlement west of the Mississippi River was established in 1811…

As always you may left click upon an image to see an enlarged view and then click once again to see an even larger view…

Fort Astoria…all that remains is this plaque and a small park…

* We also toured the Victorian Style home of George Flavel, one of Astoria’s most prominent citizens in 1884 when he passed away. The Flavel House…

Picture

* Last we visited the Heritage Museum which nicely presented the city’s rich and colorful history.
This early 1900’s bar is in the Heritage Museum…

To learn more about the Flavel Home and Heritage Museum, go to the Clatsop County Historical Society’s website at: http://cchs@cumtux.org

Finally…here’s a different sign than I usually see! Unless you live on the low-lying coast of Oregon, you probably don’t have this sign in your town/city…

Yesterday Mary and I visited Astoria, Oregon which was the first settlement west of the Mississippi River and established by John Jacob Astor as a fur trading post (even though he never went there) in 1811. Among the things we saw were…

The Astoria-Megler Bridge which spans 4.1 miles across the Columbia River linking Oregon and Washington was dedicated on August 27, 1966. The bridge’s main span is 1,232 feet in length, the longest continuous truss in the world. We will cross this bridge into Washington this coming Friday.

Then we visited the remains of the old Hanthorn Cannery which opened in 1875 and was one of 38 canneries once operating in Astoria. It had a really neat museum. The photo was taken in the 1920’s. It was the home of the famous Bumble Bee brand of tuna and salmon.

After that we went to the Columbia River Maritime Museum which does a great job of telling the history of the river. The first photo is a huge display in the main lobby identifying some of the wrecks which make up the “Graveyard of the Pacific”. The second photo is of a full-size 44′ Coast Guard boat affecting a rescue.

A couple of days ago I drove the Bronco the 20 miles back to Astoria, Oregon to visit the Columbia River Maritime Museum. The museum does a great job of presenting the history of the Columbia River. You can read about this museum at their website by clicking this link…http://www.crmm.org/

Many areas of the museum are darker with exhibits illuminated by spotlight making it difficult for hand-held photography. Nonetheless…here are some of the photos that I took…
