Since my RVing life is changing (see above), I’m starting to re-visit previously visited places. So rather than constantly re-blogging past entries, I’ve decided to do something different.

  In 2011-2013, Mary and I did a 682 day, 12,679 miles in the motorhome and 8,000 miles in the Bronco, circumnavigation of the United States, which I called The Great Adventure. I called it so because other than my oldest granddaughter’s high school graduation in June in Connecticut, I didn’t know where we would be going or when we would be there!

So, unless I do something really different and unusual warranting a new blog entry, I’ll be posting entries from that trip.

The motorhome is parked in the yard of Mary’s old friend, Bernice, at Bark River, Michigan. We expect to depart here later this morning..

 

 

In yesterday’s Blog I mentioned my continuing problem with the electrical connection between the motorhome and the Bronco. While Mary went off in search of memories with her friend Bernice,  I attempted to rewire the connector on the umbilical cord and after several frustrating hours finally gave up with only partial success. So, with turn signals finally working and no left brake light on the Bronco we’ll head out this morning. Fortunately at our next planned destination of Iron Mountain, Michigan, there appears to be a shop there which hopefully can resolve the problem.

 

 

99% of the time when I set out to fix something it gets fixed. This is the 1% when its time to throw in the towel and turn to the pros. Sometimes you just gotta do what you gotta do!

 

 

Being around a farm for the last four days has greatly increased my knowledge and made me more appreciative of this lifestyle. Like Casey Johnson in yesterday’s Blog said…”If you like long hours and little money, farming might be for you!”

 

 

A farm is also a great place to take photos. I’ve taken a lot more, but because we are once again bumping up against our gigabyte limit on our Internet service, today you only get to see twelve photos…

The motorhome is parked in the yard of Mary’s old friend, Bernice, at Bark River, Michigan. We expect to depart here tomorrow.

 

 

In yesterday’s Blog entry I mentioned working on my umbilical cord electrical connection between the motorhome and Bronco.. Because of the confusion arising from mirror images in the wiring, I managed to blow three fuses on the motorhome and had to take it to Escanaba about 10 miles away to a shop to first find the fuses and then replace them. I think I’ve got it figured out and hope to complete the activity today so we can depart tomorrow as planned.

 

 

Also yesterday, Bernice’s son Mark took us to a friend of his who owns a dairy farm to see the morning milking activities. Having been born in a city and living most of my life that way, I know little about the dairy way of life and so, found it interesting. Here are some of the photos that I took…

A few days back I mentioned problems I was having with the electrical connection between the Bronco and the motorhome. While Mary, Bernice and her sister Marie went off in search of memories, I changed out the male portion of the electrical connection attached on the Bronco. With the help of Mark, Bernice’s son, it took us three hours to do this job…

I’m planning to change out the female portion of the electrical connection on the umbilical cord today.

 

 

 

 

 

About 4:00 PM yesterday I went out to check the temperature. When we arrived the day before yesterday it was 108 degrees. Yesterday it was only 98 degrees. Where’s my long underwear?  🙂

 

 

 

 

 

While out to check the temperature, I found Mark cleaning the garage…

 

 

 

 

 

Just then, the ladies were returning from their memory search, so I got this photo of them…

Yesterday I drove the motorhome the 57 miles north from Menominee to Bark River, Michigan. We are here visiting Mary’s long-time friend Bernice. We expect to depart here on Sunday.

 

 

When we arrived yesterday it was 108 degrees in the sun with 52% humidity!  YUK!!!

 

 

Bernice has 400 acres with a home a mile down a dirt road off of the county paved road…

About 8:00 PM last evening we had a heavy-duty thunderstorm with lightning which lasted about 1/2 hour. After it was over, this was the sky looking east…

And the sky looking east again at 6:30 AM this morning…

 

 

After the storm the temperature had dropped to 68 degrees…very refreshing after the heat of the day. This morning at 6;30 AM it was 64 degrees with 96% humidity! YUK once again!

Yesterday I drove the motorhome the 54 miles south from Escanaba to Menominee, Michigan. Mary lived here from ages 3 – 5.

 

 

It was a miserably hot and humid day…about 85 degrees and humidity. Another one is forecast for today. YUK!

Upon arrival we parked at VFW Post #1887 where they had shade and an electrical hookup…

I unhooked the Bronco and off we went to explore elements of Mary’s past. But first it was time for lunch so we stopped at Colonel K’s Pasty Shop…

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Third owner Becky confessed she’s made many a pasty…

 

 

We then crossed the Menominee River into Marinette, Wisconsin to search for Mary’s grandmother’s house. After more than an hour in the blistering heat…she finally found it.

 

 

Then she wanted to visit to the Peshtigo Fire Museum about 10 miles distant. This museum documents the story of the worst fire (number of people died) in the history of the United States. The docent described it as a fire tornado that occurred on October 8, 1971…coincidentally the same date as the famous Chicago Fire. We crossed back into Menominee. This time to look for the house that her brother Bill was born in. With no specific address in the general area…she thinks she found it. The house she lived in nearby is gone and was replaced by this church…

The motorhome is parked at Shady Acres RV Park in Yuma, Arizona. I may be here until March 4th.

 

 

 

Since my RVing life is changing (see above), I’m starting to re-visit previously visited places. So rather than constantly re-blogging past entries, I’ve decided to do something different.

  In 2011-2013, Mary and I did a 682 day, 12,679 miles in the motorhome and 8,000 miles in the Bronco, circumnavigation of the United States, which I called The Great Adventure. I called it so because other than my oldest granddaughter’s high school graduation in June in Connecticut, I didn’t know where we would be going or when we would be there!

So, unless I do something really different and unusual warranting a new blog entry, I’ll be posting entries from that trip.

Yesterday I drove the motorhome the 145 miles from St. Ignace to Escanaba, Michigan. We are now in the general region Mary lived for the first 14 years of her life and will be in this area for the next few days.

 

 

Yesterday, leaving St. Ignace,  we drove along U.S. Highway Route 2 West which we will follow more or less to the State of Washington for the about next five weeks.

 

 

Yesterday’s drive was quite pleasant. Route 2, considering we’re in Michigan…the land of terrible roads…was relatively smooth with only light traffic. For a good portion of the trip we drove along the shore of Lake Michigan…

I unhooked the Bronco so we could drive around Escanaba where Mary lived from 1948 to 1954. We stopped at the Sand Point Lighthouse…

 

 

 

 

 

and the adjacent Delta County Historical Museum where I found this image of Escanaba from the mid-1800’s…

 

 

 

 

 

Mary first lived in this house…

 

 

 

 

 

Her family moved away for a short while and when they returned lived in the left side of this duplex…

 

 

Mary really enjoyed her afternoon and evening returning to other places she remembered from her childhood remarking on how much somethings had changed and others not at all.

 

 

Enjoying visiting places you once lived is another joy in the life of a full-time RVer!
