First Physical Therapy Day

Mary is no longer available for RV traveling, but we remain good friends.
Because we have 4,000+ postings, I’ve invited her to continue posting entries on this blog.

The motorhome is parked at Mary’s home in Murphys, California. While here I’ll perform routine maintenance and cleaning of both the motorhome and Bronco.

Mary had surgery on her right shoulder April 15th.

I want to assist her during recovery however I can. I assisted her with her left shoulder surgery in 2009. Whenever it’s convenient and I know that she is comfortable, I’ll make my future travel plans at that time.

 

Yesterday I drove Mary the 10 miles to Angels Camp for her first day of physical therapy. Her therapy is expected to go on for 3+ months…

Even though she had completed several forms before leaving home, they had more awaiting her upon arrival…

 

 

 

It appears to be a full-service facility…

 

 

 

 

The 45 minute session began slowly…

 

 

 

Slowly a little more movement…

 

 

 

Until a 90 degree was achieved. She will have once-a-week sessions for the next several weeks until she returns to see her surgeon for a further exam on June 2nd…

The motorhome is parked at Mary’s home in Murphys, California. While here I’ll perform routine maintenance and cleaning of both the motorhome and Bronco.

I’m not sure how long I’ll be here. Mary just found out that she will be having surgery on her right shoulder on April 15th. I’ll want to assist her during recovery however I can.

I assisted her with her left shoulder surgery in 2009. Whenever it’s convenient and I know that she is comfortable after her surgery, I’ll make my future travel plans at that time.

 

Today is pre-op day, when we meet with the doctor to ready for the operation on Friday.

Mary’s home is in the gold country of California. The precious metal was discovered about a one hour drive (today) away in 1849. California Highway 49 runs right through the middle of Angels Camp…only nine miles west of her location.

QUALITY FAST FOOD.

Restaurants really have to be good to make it. Sidewinders, in Angels Camp, just got new owners. I had to make a bunch of copies and I had errands ahead of me in town and hunger drove me to a quick lunch.

I ordered the grilled chicken sandwich, believing it would be served on a cheap hamburger bun from the waitresses description. To my surprise, a quality roll, a tender, tangy grilled chicken breast with crisp condiments. A condiment bar allows you to add whatever. Very tasty. Sides are by choice, I could have chosen coleslaw, beans, or other items rather than cottage cheese and fruit.

A rarity for fast food, fresh flowers on every table.

Angels Camp has a couple of these old buildings with stone walls.

The stone is not only beautiful, but cool in hot summers. Sidewinders has a basement and plenty of room and charm. Though you order from the counter, they bring your food to you and the owner, Stacy Piersons was attentive and service oriented, checking to see if all was good. Really nice. It was fast, good and comfortable. Just what I needed.

Gold Rush Day – Angels Camp, California

I HOPE YOU ENJOYED THE PHOTOS.

The cataract surgery on my right eye was successfully accomplished at the VA Hospital in Palo Alto, California on October 9th and I’m in my recovery mode. I have a post-op exam scheduled for October 24th. Also at that time I’ll have a pre-op exam for my left eye. That surgery is scheduled for November 6th.

Yesterday was a sunny day and 77 degrees. Forecast for today is sunny and 80 degrees.

A BRIGHT SPOT FOR EVERYDAY

An early appointment for a therapeutic massage put me on the road to Angels Camp on the Murphys Grade Rd. And this tree popped into my line of sight. It was so bright it appeared to be on fire. I couldn’t believe it, but, the picture doesn’t do it justice. Kind of reminded me of Moses and the burning bush. My daughter Virginia climbed Mt. Sinai and spotted a similar burning bush lit by the rays of the sun. She went to college one year in Egypt.

Because I was early for my appointment, and the sun was so perfect, I stopped for a couple of barns. I’m sure everyone but me is tired of barn pictures. I don’t know the owner of this one.

This one belongs to Tom Tryon, a friend I haven’t seen in a three or four years. How does that happen, I ask myself?

And, this little miners shack, just west of town. I wanted to do some grocery shopping but the stores were packed, so I skipped.

About 4:00 in the afternoon,  I drove to Tuolumne County for my Elks Club dinner meeting. The reservoir is down so low it is scary.

You can see remnants of the old road before Spicer Dam flooded the area. I used to love this windy road down to the bottom of the canyon, over the river and then back up to the Tuolumne side. I still like it, even with the changes and the “new” bridge.

The low sun lit up the hillside across from the Bridge, and I had to stop a minute and admire the scene.

I left early enough to stop in and see Anne and her caretaker, Tynna. They are now out of quarantine. Tynna showed me the lap robes they are knitting for wheelchair bound people, for Christmas. Their charity. Tynna does most of the knitting and Anne tells her how to do it in a round shape so they don’t catch on the wheel chair mechanics. Years ago, Anne made give away baby quilts and used up tons of what would have been throw-away material.

Then, on I went to my Elks Club dinner meeting. Because I travel so much, I don’t know everyone. But, I usually get to know one person at a time. I ordered a craft beer at the bar and Dennis Costa told me about his son, who is the brew master for Half Moon Bay’s brewpub. I love Half Moon Bay, so hopefully I’ll get to meet him someday and enjoy a brew.

Another bright spot. I spoke with this woman and said, “How are you?”  Her answer, “I’m superb!”  I loved it. Apparently she had been ill and was reveling in her wellness. Her husband is the Elks Foundation Leader. I like Elks Charity which supports abused children. The foundation raises funds for the National Office.

I sat next to Laurel…

…and Dave Utecht. They are former members of the Escapees, an RVing Club. Jim and I both know members of that club. They were very active for years in the singles Birds of a Feather Buff group within the Escapees, which had about 115 members.  So we had a lot to talk about, mutual friends and wonderful travels. What a surprise.

With the Elks, I always consider my self their traveling ambassador and I announce what Elks Clubs we visited in our travels.  For 2012 and 2013, this two-year circumnavigation of the U.S. we visited, Kingsville, Texas Elks, Camden, Tennessee, Oakland, New Jersey,  Norwalk, Ohio, Iron Mt. Michigan, Devils Lake, N. Dakota, and Kallispell Montana.  And, All I had to show for it was this Crappie T Shirt. What a nice bunch of people.

LOGGING TRUCKS ARE ROLLIN’

At one time, gigantic logging trucks like this one rumbled right through downtown Murphys. Officially rerouted in the 1990’s,  they can no longer do that. They roll down the mountain and keep to Highway 4 on their way to the mill. Loggers can still plow right through  downtown  Angels Camp on Highway 49.  I must admit to a bit of joy at seeing them. In the 80’s I rode with a logger to the woods and photographed  the complete operation from cutting, skidding,  loading, chaining up and delivering them to the mill. In fact, the driver pulled over to tighten his chains once we left  the rugged logging road and I got out  to take the big behemoth’s picture.  A guy backing out of his driveway, without looking, backed into me with his pick-up. I was unhurt, thankfully.  I wish I had those pictures in digital format.

Today’s logs, compared to logging in the seventies and eighties look like toothpicks. I’ve seen two or three or four logs fill one of these trucks. A tree trunk riding high half above the cab made you fear a slipping chain would allow a log to  smash through the cab and kill anybody inside.  The weight of the load was especially noticeable on Murphys Grade from Forest Meadows to Murphys with the driver managing the winding road, his jake brake scudding.  The memories, the sights and smells are great and I’m glad for the truck owners and loggers who have work again. Standard recently opened their mill in Sonora and I followed three trucks down to the river, and across the other side over Parrots Ferry Bridge on my way to the dentist. I returned by way of Stevenot Bridge on 49 through Angels Camp. I counted, coming toward me, four logging trucks which means a full truck was moving through town every five minutes on both highways.  As I did some errands,  I saw two more pass. Sure enough, I waited and caught this one moving through town.  While the jobs are great, they are most likely clear cutting for Sierra Pacific. SP refuses to compromise and do select cuts. They clear huge swaths of land and destroy the beauty and ecology of our area in the Sierra Nevadas. SP owns over a million acres above us, and young trees are falling to the axe.  A local group, Forest Watch, has photographed and protested their business practices, but the best way to make them accountable to the local community is to refuse to buy Sierra Pacific Lumber. I recommend you  buy certified lumber that is sustainably cut. It is stamped on the end of each board. It is possible to log without desecrating the land and habitat, but the bottom line for corporations  is people, nature, and animals last and money first. When I saw that logging had resumed, I speculated on the recent appearance of bear and feral pigs at our elevation and wonder if clear cutting could be upsetting the balance?
