Today… A trip down memory lane!
2004 Central America trip…
This trip ended up being 343 days and 16,000+ miles through the back-country of Mexico, Belize, Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Costa Rica and Panama. 11 rigs started the trip, within a week we broke into three smaller groups for ease of traveling. Only myself and one other rig went the full, pre-planned route. All the others dropped out for various reasons. All returned safely to the United States. I’m planning to show these photos, more or less, 10 a day, whenever I’m not doing something else deserving a blog entry. FINALLY, it must be remembered these photos are prior to my switching to digital in 2006. The films were developed during our trip and the lack of quality control sometimes is plainly evident.
Today…Nicaragua (north-bound) #3…
We are still in Leon, Nicaragua.
A very interesting thing to see were the anti-American and anti-CIA murals left over from the revolution. We had not seen these in any other place. These were huge murals, covering the sides of two and three-story buildings. They depicted the United States Government backing the dictator, Somoza, as opposed to the oppressed revolutionaries. Despite these murals, the people were still very friendly to us…

We are now in the town of Chichigalpa, population about 10,000. In this town, is Flor de Cana (flower of the sugar) cane) distillery…
The rum is stored in wooden barrels that they buy from Kentucky, in the United States…
Many believe this brand is the finest rum in the world, aged up to 21 years, and made in 16 flavors…
I think the quality control guy had the best job in the place…
We moved on to the city of Chinandega, at the foot of the still active 5,200 foot steaming volcano. With a population of about 140,000 and at an elevation of 200 feet, it is considered to be the hottest and driest city in Nicaragua…
