The motorhome is parked at Thousand Trails RV Resort in La Conner, Washington. I’m scheduled to depart August 6th.
Today… A trip down memory lane!
2004 Central America trip…
This trip ended up being 343 days and 16,000+ miles through the back-country of Mexico, Belize, Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Costa Rica and Panama. 11 rigs started the trip, within a week we broke into three smaller groups for ease of traveling. Only myself and one other rig went the full, pre-planned route. All the others dropped out for various reasons. All returned safely to the United States. I’m planning to show these photos, more or less, 10 a day, whenever I’m not doing something else deserving a blog entry. FINALLY, it must be remembered these photos are prior to my switching to digital in 2006. The films were developed during our trip and the lack of quality control sometimes is plainly evident.
Today…Nicaragua (south-bound) #4…
As always you may left click upon an image to see an enlarged view and then click once again to see an even larger view…
I thoroughly enjoyed the children in every country we visited…
Happy hour along the shore of Apoyo Lagoon in the crater of an old volcano…
These young people had a little too much to drink and were very happy…
The highest point is El Mirador (The Overlook). I showed the view from El Mirador a couple of blog postings back…
Back in Granda we are now at the ferry that will take Bud and myself as walk-on passengers to Ometepe Island in the middle of huge Lake Nicaragua. Since the ferry is one-ended, the cars here are backing on to the ferry so they can drive straight off upon arrival on the island…
About one-half of the way there, the active volcano is shrouded in clouds…
This ferry had been in operation for many years. It really was kind of an old rust bucket on which I felt not all that secure that we would make it to the island…
Approaching the dock off to the right, I see a lot of women doing their laundry in the lake. The more fortunate ones have thatching overhead to provide some shelter from overbearing sun and heat…
We arrive and the vehicles begin unloading. The active Conception Volcano in the background looks ominous to me, yet the locals seem to be unconcerned. At 5,282 feet, Conception Volcano makes Ometepe Island the highest lake island in the world…
To see our experience on Ometepe Island, you will need to come back for the next blog posting. In the meantime you can read all about Ometepe Island by clicking this link…https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ometepe
Nicaragua proved to be my favorite country in all of Central America!

My current travel rig is a 2006 Fleetwood 26′ Class A Motorhome and a towed 1986 Ford Bronco II, Eddie Bauer Model. This photo was taken in the desert at Slab City near Niland, California…
