Yesterday I drove the Bronco about 20 miles up to about 8,500 feet elevation to Valles Caldera…one of only six known land-based super volcanoes in the world. It has a diameter of 12 miles. You can read all about this place by clicking this Wikipedia link…

Also yesterday, I was really lucky. It was four months to the day since the tragic accident suffered on a tour in Canyon de Chelly, Arizona. Yesterday I booked a ride on a 2.5 hour van photo tour…the first tour I’ve taken since the accident…and we got back safely! Secondly, there were three other people registered for the tour…but they didn’t show up…so I was the only one on what ended up to be a three-hour tour. I struck up a very nice rapport with the driver/tour guide Jim Trout. He is very knowledgeable of the volcano and its history and made many stops to explain things. He also stopped at my request so that I could take photos. We covered 28 miles in three hours. A real enjoyable day!
Once again, I was there during mid-day…the worst of photographic conditions. It’s a photography fact of life…overhead lighting on landscapes means washed-out, flat-looking pictures. So I resorted to my favorite remedy and shot most of the photos in the watercolor painting mode…
Here are some photos from yesterday…
