The motorhome is parked at Mary’s home in Murphys, California. I expect to be here 2-3 weeks.
Since my RVing life is changing (see above), I’m starting to re-visit previously visited places. So rather than constantly re-blogging past entries, I’ve decided to do something different.
In 2012-2013, Mary and I did a 682 day, 12,679 miles in the motorhome and 8,000 miles in the Bronco, circumnavigation of the United States, which I called The Great Adventure. I called it so because other than my oldest granddaughter’s high school graduation in June in Connecticut, I didn’t know where we would be going or when we would be there!
So, unless I do something really different and unusual warranting a new blog entry, I’ll be posting entries from that trip.

What is the Big Ditch? I’m glad you asked.
From the below Wikipedia link about Silver City…this explanation is given…
The town had originally been designed with the streets running north to south. The town was also built in the path of normal water runoff. Businesses sprang up and people learned to deal with the inconveniences of the summer rain. Silver City was built with high sidewalks in the downtown area to accommodate high flood waters. Meanwhile, uncontrolled grazing thinned down plant life on hills surrounding the town. During the night of July 21, 1895, a heavy wall of water rushed through the downtown business district, leaving a trail of destruction. A ditch 55 feet (17 m) lower than the original street level was created in what was once known as Main Street. Businesses on Main Street began using their back doors on Bullard Street as main entrances and eventually, were permanently used as the new front entrances. To this day, the incorrect odd/even addressing conventions on the east side of Bullard Street are a reminder that the buildings were addressed on Main Street originally, not Bullard Street. Main Street now ends near the back of the Silver City Police Station, where the Big Ditch Park begins.

A series of devastating floods between 1890 and 1910 washed away the original Main Street and all but one of its handsome brick buildings. What used to be Main Street is now known as the Big Ditch and lies some 55 feet below grade. The stately Warren house by the Market Street pedestrian bridge is the sole survivor…
The above house is the only one remaining that faces the Big Ditch that was once upon a time…Main Street.
The Big Ditch is certainly a unique claim to fame. In all my travels I cannot ever remember visiting another town/city with such a unique history.
