Algodones, Mexico – A Unique Place In The World

Mary is no longer available for RV traveling, but we remain good friends.
Because we have 4,000+ postings, I’ve invited her to continue posting entries on this blog.
I’m currently in my 22nd year of full-time RVing and my lifestyle is changing, For more info click Here

The motorhome is parked at the Paradise Casino in Yuma, Arizona. I was expecting to leave here recently, but I’ve changed my mind. I currently have reservations at Thousand Trails in Palm Desert, California, February 13th. Between now and then???? For the moment I remain in Yuma.

I just love the ability to change plans at a moments notice. As I tell everyone…All my plans are firmly etched in Jello!

Today’s subject: Algodones, Mexico – A Unique Place In The World

Today’s Blog was first posted in January, 2014…

Yesterday I drove the Bronco seven miles to the border and walked into Los Algodones, Mexico. What makes this a unique place?…you ask. it’s because within a four block radius there are more pharmacies, doctors, dentists and opticians than a similar four block area anywhere else in the world!

The primary reason for our visit was that I could get two pair of prescription eyeglasses…one for reading and one for driving at about 1/3 of the price in the United States. Several thousand snowbirds cross into Agodones, Mexico every day during the winter season.

Here’s a view of the border crossing as seen from the walkway of our parking lot. The tall building is our destination…

I have been here a number of times…Mary’s second.  One of the many fun things about Algodones is the “pitchmen”. Immediately passing through the gate into Mexico, several…all about the same time start shouting…“Looking for dentist, optical, Pharmacy? Over here for the best price. Cheaper than K-Mart!”

We proceeded to the street level of a newly…currently being built…plaza at the recommendation of a couple of friends of mine…

To Algodones Optical. Not some small dusty little store you might expect to find in Mexico…

The doctor told me I have a large cataract in my right eye which I should attend to within the next year. We picked up my new glasses three hours later. I got the two pair with ultra-light ply carbon lens and a 30 minute eye exam for $199.00 U.S. Dollars. Would have been about triple that figure in the United States.

While the glasses were being made, Mary visited her dentist office…

We wandered through some of the many tourist shops and finally ended up at our favorite eating place in Algodones. You won’t see a sign like this in any United States restaurant!…

At 10:00 o’clock in the morning we both had a Tecate Beer with our meals. Mary had the shrimp and fish tacos while I had the 1/2 chicken. As usual…wonderfully delicious!…

After picking up my glasses we crossed back into the United States.
