San Carlos Beach – Monterey, California

The motorhome is parked at Mary’s home in Murphys, California.

Recently I spent several days in Monterey…an area rich in beautiful scenery and history. A bonanza for a travel blogger! I ended up with 17 blog titles and 628 photos which I’ll present through about May 15th. This works well for me because I’ll be in an “idle period” during that time. During my time at Mary’s, I’ll do routine maintenance, minor repairs and cleaning. On about May 21, Mary and I are planning to head-out for Yellowstone National Park (and other destinations) in Wyoming. Till then, enjoy Monterey!

Today’s subject – San Carlos Beach…

About one mile north of the City of Monterey is a breakwater and Coast Guard Station. Directly adjacent is San Carlos Beach. I arrived there about 10 AM on a Saturday morning and the place was loaded with scuba divers.

I was on my way to Cannery Row which will be the topic starting on tomorrow’s blog.

In the below Google Earth image, “SCB” indicates the location of San Carlos Beach……

And back in 1958-59, Mary scuba dived on this very beach. Here are some of her photos from back then…

Hot day, mother insisted I dress in my gear for a picture. Mary objected but mom prevailed. Now she’s glad she has a remembrance picture all geared up.

In 1958 Mary went to work at the Sheriff’s Office and because she was already an experienced diver, she was asked to help teach the Sheriff’s Dept. Underwater Rescue Unit. On graduation day, she prepared and gave a written test to all of the divers…

Pretty neat, huh?…
