WE ARE MORE ALIVE WHEN OUR HEARTS ARE CONSCIOUS OF OUR TREASURES. I think that is a quote from Thornton Wilder.
I’m thinking of that Norman Rockwell Cover of the family with a big fat turkey on the table. I’m going to enjoy Thanksgiving at my son’s house in Valley Springs. As a family we always count our blessings and give thanks for what we have. And we will have that fat turkey at our table. People are generous at Thanksgiving and Christmas; Americans are very giving in general.
Hunger in America is very high this year. People are hungry all year-long, not just over the holidays. I’m told by church members that food boxes at Thanksgiving cannot supply enough turkeys for every family in need this year in both counties, Tuolumne and Calaveras. I hope you dig deep and can help out in your community.
With all the talk, (if they haven’t already done it,) about cutting food stamps, here is how the food stamp program works. It is a debit card and can’t be used for anything but food. It provides $7 a day. Remember that a half-gallon of milk is $3.50. Seven dollars does not go very far. The link below has information about the food stamp program, how it works, the myths and facts about people who use food stamps and so on.
Here from my Friend Dominic Torchia is a somewhat personal perspective:
2. Grossly underfunded.
3. Insufficient benefits for the millions of poverty stricken Americans.
From what I undersand Linda Taylor was convicted and served time for her welfare fraud. Corruption occurs at all levels of government, Democrats included, big time, it is a daily news reel here in Illinois. I started following your blog but there have been a few posts where I’m sensing some underlying hate. I’m putting together a donation for a thanksgiving meal for a family of 9 and by some of your links there are people that would consider me an evil horrible person. Milk must be super expensive where you are. A gallon of milk here in Cook County, home of the welfare queen Linda Taylor, can be had for $2.00 a gallon. I wonder if it would be cheeper just to get a cow.
Hi Stitch in time,
There is no hate in my soul, but the piece I chose on Regan was filled with vitriol. I rarely click on a link in a blog, but I put them in now and then anyway. I do think the writer is correct when he said the welfare queen did not have 45 identities, etc. And, that we sterotype welfare recipients as lazy blacks who choose not to work. I have a tenant, white, who is on food stamps. She looks well enough to work, but is not. And, when she applied for jobs after the economy took a dump, they hire people in their 40’s and 50’s. She is 60. There are plenty of people out there who want work and can’t find a job that keeps them supported with enough resources to eat and pay rent. But keeping people poor by cutting food stamps is a reprehensible move in view of the number of children, in a country as wealthy was ours, going hungry. I do get angry. Anger is not hate.
Thanks for stopping by.
well i didn’t think you guys were hatefull at all so i was at a loss as to the links in the post. I read it and all I could think was that person has a really big chip on their shoulder. So I could only think that that is how you must feel as well. yes, reducing the amount is frustrating, especially when the government blows through 700 million dollars on a stupid healthcare website. Just think how many potatoes 700 million dollars can buy! Uggh. you’re right.
I wish I could find milk for $2.00 a half gallon. And, obviously you are not an evil person. Sorry if I offended or gave that impression. Corruption is, as you say, across all party lines. Solutions impress me, gridlock does not, not matter who is causing obstruction.
Just a quick note to inform you that I have put a link to your web page on my Valley Springs Directory web page at http://goldcountrydirectory.com/ValleySprings.html
There is no charge for this service.

Thanks. I appreciate that.
