Park City, Kentucky – Day 4
May 10, 2013
The motorhome is still parked at the Thousand Trails Diamond Caverns RV Resort at Park City, Kentucky. We expect to leave here later this morning.
The day before yesterday I drove the Bronco the about seven miles to the visitors center at Mammouth Cave National Park. At 400 miles, it is the longest known cave system in the world. What makes it more amazing is that it is all contained in about a seven mile diameter area and only goes down a maximum of 400 feet into the earth.
Because of Mary’s ongoing physical pains and problems we only took the “old folks” tour…1/4 mile in and out. We were in the cave for about 45 minutes. At the end there are 49 steps that go down to the bottom. Mary did not attempt those steps for which I am glad. I managed them okay.
Yesterday I showed you the photos from the visitors center. Today you get to see the actual cave photos…but first a word about the photos. I really dislike flash photography and hence keep the flash feature of my camera shut off. No flash photography for me! Park rules do not allow tripods on tours…so all the photos were taken in a hand-held mode.
The cave was very dark and lit by variously colored spotlights. So the color in any particular photo was directly controlled by the color frequency of the illuminating light. Because of the color of the lights, formations of the rocks and shadows, some of the photos approach an abstract perspective. I hope you enjoy them!

On October 27, 2012, I created a two-minute video titled America The Beautiful. The music America The Beautiful is by Christopher W. French. The photos, which I randomly selected, are from the states of Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Mississippi, Montana, New Mexico, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Texas, Tennessee, Washington and West Virginia (not shown in that order)…are mine. Yup, That’s me standing in front of the Post Office in Luckenbach, Texas…Y’all!

Park City, Kentucky – Day 3

Now…here’s my problem regarding photos. Since today is laundry day for us…if I show you all of yesterday’s photos today…all you get to see tomorrow are my dirty clothes. So…I’ve decided for today to only show you photos from the great visitors center and show you the actual cave photos tomorrow. I thought that would be your preference…

The day started with some morning fog which I thought made a nice photo…
More than 400,000 people come to this visitors center yearly…

The motorhome is still parked at the Thousand Trails Diamond Caverns RV Resort at Park City, Kentucky. We expect to leave here on Friday.
Mary spent most of yesterday on legal paperwork. I spent most of the day reading and assisting her with computer and printer problems. After she finished the paperwork had to be mailed, so off to town we went. Along the way back I took a few photos…

Park City, Kentucky – Day 1
May 7, 2013
Yesterday I drove the motorhome the about 35 miles from Bowling Green to Park City, Kentucky.
Along the way we stopped at the National Corvette Museum. This 115,000 square foot facility is the only museum in the United States devoted to a single model automobile. Corvettes have been made since 1953…so this is the 60th year anniversary. The assembly plant across the way is currently closed to public tours. A 2013 Corvette Convertible has a manufacturer’s starting retail price of $75,925 just in case you were wondering…
Here are some of the photos that I took…
As always you may left click upon an image to see an enlarged view and then click once again to see an even larger view…
Be sure to double-click this first photo and read the writing on the bench…
Looking closely who’s driving! Not really…it was all done by a computer…
Continuing along we arrived at Thousand Trails Diamond Caverns Campground…
Here’s the usual dinette window photo…
We expect to depart here on Friday.

Clarksville, Tennessee – Day 3
May 5, 2013
The motorhome is still parked at VFW Post #4895. We are planning to depart later this morning and will be crossing into Kentucky.
Yesterday was a leisurely day. It was supposed to rain hard…but never did. We decided to visit the Fort Defiance Civil War Park and Interpretive Center. There once was a fort there…but no battle was fought there. The Confederates were thinly staffed and poorly trained. Believing they had not a chance against the expected superior Union forces…they walked away from the fort. When the Yankees arrived…they found white flags flying from the fort and the city surrendered without a shot being fired.
The Interpretive Center tells the story of what life was like in Clarksville, population 5,000, during the Civil War. A 15 minute film presents it from a woman’s point of view. You can read about the Interpretive Center by clicking their official website link…
http://www.cityofclarksville.com/index.aspx?page=161
Here are some of the photos that I took…
As always you may left click upon an image to see an enlarged view and then click once again to see an even larger view…
The fort is gone…a pedestrian trail lines the area…
This is where the fort was…
Some signs in the area…
Clarksville…
Scenes from the film…
The fort(s) were like magnets for black slaves wanting to join the Union Army…
Under occupation whites needed passes to go places and had to present these passes to the black Union Soldiers…
General Grant…
Under occupation business resumed…
Confederate dead…
Regular life returned for the Southerners…
Exhibits inside the Interpretive Center. Photography was difficult due to dim lighting and mini-spotlights…
The red line shows the railroad passing through Clarksville…
Crossing the hidden fingers meant the loyalty oath didn’t count to some. See below…
The Interpretive Center was a very pleasant different presentation about the times during the Civil War.
After our visit we headed down to the riverfront…
Where we saw some of the remnants of the recent flooding of the river…
The rail fence in the river is where people would normally walk…
On the left in the below photo you can see the river had been into the parking lots by the mud and snags stacked in a pile on the left just beyond the truck…
Two prized possessions during the Civil War were the rivers and railroads…both means of moving supplies…
The control house for the swinging bridge…

Clarksville, Tennessee – Day 2
May 4, 2013
The motorhome is still parked at VFW Post #4895. Heavy rains are forecast for today so we are now planning to depart tomorrow.
Yesterday I spent part of the morning researching our future possible routes and things to see and do as we continue our travels towards New England. Then I took Mary to the recycle center so she coud continue saving the earth. On the way back to the motorhome we stopped at a used bookstore and found they were having a going-out-of-business sale. I bought 23 books for $.50 each. Such a deal!
In the afternoon Mary had a professional massage and says she had a good night’s sleep and is feeling somewhat better this morning. She and I continue to deal with aches and pains from the May 27th accident of last year.
After her massage we went to the Custom House Museum and Cultural Center. Here are some of the photos that I took…
As always you may left click upon an image to see an enlarged view and then click once again to see an even larger view…

Clarksville, Tennessee – Day 1
May 3, 2013
Yesterday I drove the motorhome the about 75 miles from Camden to Clarksville, Tennessee.
First thing before leaving Camden was a lube and oil change for the motorhome…
As always you may left click upon an image to see an enlarged view and then click once again to see an even larger view…
Then on to Fort Donelson National Battlefield where one of the first important battles of the Civil War was fought February 11 to 16, 1862. Into the visitors center…
We began our visit with a 15 minute film that explained why this location was so important…
It was considered the Gateway to the Heart of The South. You can read all about Fort Donelson by clicking their official website link…
http://www.nps.gov/fodo/index.htm
You can get additional information by clicking this Wikipedia link…
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Fort_Donelson
Then through the museum…
Down to the Cumberland River where the primary battle of Fort Donelson took place…
Then on to VFW Post #4895 in Clarksville…
and the view from the dinette window photo…
Heavy rain and thunderstorms are forecast for the next two days. Plus Mary continues to struggle with an assortment of pains and is now talking about seeking a professional massage to find relief. We’ll also take in some of the local sights…so I guessing we will be here 2-3 days.
Enjoying interesting places and museums is another joy in the life of a full-time RVer!

Camden, Tennessee
May 2, 2013
Yesterday I drove the motorhome the about 75 miles from Savannah to Camden, Tennessee.
Along the way we traveled on some narrow back roads…
As always you may left click upon an image to see an enlarged view and then click once again to see an even larger view…
Our first stop was at a rather unusual place…the Birdsong Marina, Campground and Pearl Farm/Museum. The next photo is of an aerial photo of the 58 acre complex…
And a photo of one of their advertisements…
Owners Bob and Judy Keast have two very complete websites. Here’s the link for the marina/campground…
http://www.birdsong.com/index.php
Bob told us that this is the only freshwater pearl farm in North America. Here’s the link for the Pearl Farm/Museum…

Here are some of the photos that I took there…
To see the other 21 photos that I took, click this Picasa Web Album link…

Then on into Camden where we parked the motorhome at the back of Elks Club #2156…
and my usual dinette window photo…
I then unhooked the Bronco to drive the Bronco the about five miles to the Patsy Cline Crash Site Memorial location. Patsy Cline was a very famous country-western music singer who was only 30 years old when she died. You can read about her and the crash by clicking this Wikipedia link…
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Patsy_Cline
Once you reach the parking area you have to walk down an incline for about 300 yards. Mary wasn’t up to the return climb so she waited for me at the top…
Once you know where to look you can barely see the rock through the trees…
In 2007 I passed through Patsy’s hometown of Winchester, Virginia and visited her two homes, the drugstore where she once worked and her grave site. You can see those photos by clicking this Picasa Web Album link…
https://picasaweb.google.com/110455945462646142273/PatsyCline
Upon return to the Elks club we went inside and met a bunch of very friendly people. So much so that when we exited two hours later we declared Elks club #2156 in Camden, Tennessee…The Friendliest Elks Club In The United States!
We will move along further down the road later this morning.

Savannah, Tennessee – Day 2
May 1, 2013
The motorhome is parked at Moose Lodge #1918 in Savannah, Tennessee. We expect to move on later this morning.
Yesterday I drove the Bronco the about two miles to downtown Savannah. Our first stop of the day was at the Tennessee River Museum. You can read all about this museum by clicking their official website link…
http://www.tennesseerivermuseum.org/
The museum presents the river’s history from the beginning of time. Being a photographer, I particularly enjoyed the old black and white photos of the riverboats. Most museums simply show the photos…this museum actually tells you about the photograph you are viewing.
Here are some of the photos I took yesterday…
As always you may left click upon an image to see an enlarged view and then click once again to see an even larger view…
Battle of Shiloh artifact…
Crossing the street we headed for an art gallery. Savannah is a very clean and pleasant place…
The art gallery was closed, so we decided to cross the street again and check out the Hardin County Courthouse. It has a beautiful marble circular staircase. If you are a regular follower of my Blog, you know I love to photograph these things capturing patterns, forms, shapes, shadows, etc…
A pretty tapestry hangs in the Registrar of Deeds Office…
A Confederate Memorial outside of the courthouse…
Time for lunch. On the recommendation of several locals we walked a short distance down Main Street to the Hickory Pit…
Our waitress was an experienced and helpful Carline Guthrie who has worked there for 15 years…
She helped me to decide on the 1/2 smoked chicken and the fried potato skins covered with two cheeses and real bacon bits. Very tasty indeed…
The interior of the Hickory Pit…
With this large black and white mural…
Since we had learned so much about the Tennessee River, we decided to get a closer look and drove to the nearby Riverside Park. This first photo is of the bridge we crossed over with the motorhome on U.S. Highway 64. The river is currently very high at about flood stage and is expected to crest in the next couple of days flooding low-lying roads…
A 180 degree panorama shot…
Another delightful day. Other than the fact that it was, once again, too hot and humid as testified by this photo taken at 8:00 PM when it was still 83 degrees…with lots of humidity…
