Season’s Greetings

December 25, 2012

Picture

Christmas Day finds me with the motorhome at the Tropic Winds RV Resort hiding out from the cold weather in Harlingen, Texas. Are you having a White Christmas? I’m not. Yesterday was 83 degrees…84 forecast for today. It’s the primary reason I’m here.

I do not consider myself a superstitious person, but for many years I’ve considered the number 17 my unlucky number. True or not, year 17 of my full-time RVing lifestyle concluded two days ago. If you are a regular follower of this Blog, you know year 17 was the year  Mary and I were involved in a terrible death fatality accident on May 27th in Canyon de Chelly, Arizona. If you missed that Blog entry you can read it by clicking this link…
http://wp.me/pDCku-4Eh

I was sitting a mere six feet from the unfortunate man who was killed. An experience like that gives a person a whole new perspective of life. Each day becomes so precious. Be sure to tell those of your family and friends how much you care about and love them. They are your most precious possessions.

Mary returned home to California June 19th for a July 4th family reunion. Once there, she started having medical problems apparently resulting from the accident. She has been away from me since that time. Right now she’s enjoying the holiday season with her family. She has purchased her airline ticket to rejoin me here in Harlingen on January 3rd.

She recently published her Christmas letter. If you have not seen it, you can read it now…

Today, I begin my Christmas Cards. Since re-cooping from the May 27th accident has taken over my life, I have very little news to impart.

From January through May, Jim and I did our usual trekking around the country side, being perpetual tourists. Our plan was to spend most of the year in New Mexico, a state he had not visited, in-depth, given his many years on the road.

We visited Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument, numerous desert ruins, petroglyphs, desert hikes, saw a lot of cactus, and old mines and mining towns. (Drank some good beer.) We crossed into Mexico at six different border crossings through Arizona and New Mexico. At Columbus, New Mexico we experienced a Cabalgata where the Sheriff of Luna County met the Sheriff across the border and invited a cavalcade of horseback riding caballeros to cross into New Mexico for a fiesta to celebrate their common heritage. It was a wonderful event of great fellowship with our Mexican neighbors.

Traveling about, I learned so much about the prolific Native American tribes throughout the west, Navajo, O’ddham Papago, Zuni, all antecedents of the Anasazi ancient people. Beautiful people, interesting traditions, great jewelry makers, many historical Native sites, native heroes and kids.

Near Albuquerque, a high point was participating in a balloon fest and celebration of our nations veterans. Life on the road is interesting and rewarding no matter where we go and who we meet.

The accident happened in Canyon de Chelly and Jim and I feel lucky to be alive. One man died, and the rest of us were injured, many more seriously than us. The trouble with an accident like this one is you don’t realize the extent of your injuries until the pain medications are all gone and then you find out you can’t do the things you used to. I also had to have surgery that may or may not be related to the accident. Opinion on that varies from one doctor to another.

The benefit of being home for six months has allowed me time to tackle projects put off more years than I care to admit. Some genealogy, transcribing notes from old trips, getting sprinkling systems renewed, my house painted, mature trees pruned and stabilized. Had work done on my trusty truck and a new battery pack for the Prius. I’m back on the road and driving.

We are all grateful for family and friends and all the good things life brings us. We are so very, very fortunate. I’m looking forward to Christmas and flying back to the Motor Home on January 3rd. It is cold here and Jim is complaining about the heat in Texas. (Hard to keep a weather wimp happy.)

We will start our second (for me) circumnavigation of the United States. Number six for Jim. We’ll start from the remote tip of Texas, at Harlingen. I look forward to exploring the gulf coast. Mardi Gras in February in Galveston, Texas. Visiting Karen and Glen in Virginia, Jim’s family in Connecticut, and his many friends on the East Coast. Then, a different route home than the one we took in 2010.

May your Christmas be perfect. Enjoy the season. Don’t forget to share something with those less fortunate. And, above all, hug tight your loved ones and value the things in life you can’t buy

Cheers, Mary

We hope you enjoy a wonderful holiday season!

Mary and Jim

Yesterday I drove the motorhome the about 65 miles from Clovis, New Mexico southeast to Littlefield, Texas. When I crossed the Texas border, I also crossed into the Central Time Zone. I expect to be here 3-4 days.

When you drive southeast in mid-morning, it means you will be looking into the sun. Yesterday the asphalt on the road reflected the sun like a mirror and it was most difficult to see.

As always you may left click upon an image to see an enlarged view and then click once again to see an even larger view…

As a matter of fact the sun was so bright that I drove through Muleshoe, Texas without realizing it and missed their famous tourist attraction…Darn! Click this link to see what I missed…

Arriving in Littlefield, Texas, I pulled into the Waylon Jennings RV Park. It’s a free park with electricity, water and dump station. You can stay here for free for four days. This is Waylon Jenning’s hometown. He was a mega super-star country singer and a favorite of mine for many years. Here’s a Wikipedia informational link about him…

West Texas

November 1, 2012

The motorhome is still parked at the Fraternal Order of Eagles Airee #3245. This is my fourth day here. I had planned to leave yesterday, but decided to stay an extra day. But, so far as I know right now, I’ll be departing later this morning. The border into West Texas is about 10 miles from my current location.

As always you may left click upon an image to see an enlarged view and then click once again to see an even larger view…

Mary sent this to me in an Email a few days back. Since I’ll be crossing into West Texas this morning, I thought I’d share it with you…

========================================

I sure hope this comes  through.  Wyman, the photographer, used to live in the old jail in  Benjamin, TX.  The photo of the coiled rattlesnake appeared on the  cover of a wildlife magazine in the 80s.  He said, there were times  he crawled a long way on his belly to get a good shot of a wild  animal.  The music was nice also, didn’t make me want to put it on  mute!!!

The  music is by Doug Smith. Doug is from Petersburg , Texas and lives south of town. Doug  plays by ear- He cannot read music, but has many CDs. A pickup accident  left Doug paralyzed and he does not play anymore. Most of  the pictures were taken in the rolling plains ( cap rock to Seymour , the  Fork, 6666, and Waggoner Ranches. There are some scenes in Palo Duro Canyon  .

Please take a moment and  view….I don’t know if I’ve ever seen such fantastic use of music set  to amazing animal and landscape photography.  The changes in the  tempo perfectly compliment the scenery.  It is simply a beautiful  portrayal of our magnificent home  state!

NOW THAT I HAVE YOUR ATTENTION, I’LL SHARE WITH YOU THAT…

Mary remains at home in California tending to medical issues.

The motorhome is still parked at the Fraternal Order of Eagles #3245. This was my second day here in Clovis, New Mexico.

Yesterday I drove the Bronco the about one mile to the old Norman Petty Recording Studio at 1313 W. 7th Street. It’s Clovis’s #1 tourist attraction…primarily because this is where Buddy Holly and The Crickets recorded such songs as That’ll Be The Day, Maybe Baby, Every Day, and Peggy Sue. This studio is no longer active. It was last used in 1969 when Norman Petty moved into a larger studio.

The Norman Petty Trio also had a very famous hit song of their own…Mood Indigo.

You can read all about Norman Petty by clicking this Wikipedia informational link…
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Norman_Petty

Here’s a link that will inform you all about the history of the Norman Petty Studio…
http://www.superoldies.com/pettystudios/pettytour.html

Another all-time favorite of mine, country singer WayLon Jennings recorded Jole Blon here. The following is from a Wikipedia article about Waylon Jennings…

In 1958, Buddy Holly arranged Jennings’ first recording session, of “Jolie Blon” and “When Sin Stops (Love Begins)”. Holly hired him to play bass. During the “Winter Dance Party Tour,” in Clear Lake, Iowa, Holly chartered a plane to arrive at the next venue. Jennings gave up his seat in the plane to J. P. Richardson, (The Big Bopper) who was suffering from a cold. The flight that carried Holly, Richardson and Ritchie Valens crashed, on the day later known as The Day the Music Died.

You can listen to Waylon’s first recording from 1958 by clicking the below link. Buddy Holly plays guitar and King Curtis plays the sax. Waylon went on to become a mega country singing star…
http://youtu.be/DQlw8I6sd6g

In addition, Buddy Knox (Party Doll), Roy Orbison (Pretty Woman) and Leann Rimes are among many others that have recorded here. Stepping into the studio is like stepping back in time inside of a time capsule. Kenneth Broad (age 78) provided me with the tour. He is the trustee for the Petty Estate and once was Vi Petty’s minister. He also participated in the production of some of Leann Rimes music. He has been associated with the studio for 30 years and provided endless stories about his time there. One story he told me was they recorded from midnight until dawn because the studio is located on a main road it did away with background vehicle noise and the chances of electric power failures were less. He also added that the studio remains essentially the same as it was in the Buddy Holly days when Buddy Holly had 12 top hits within a 15 month period.

Here are some of the photos that I took…

As always you may left click upon an image to see an enlarged view and then click once again to see an even larger view…

Towards the end of my tour, Kenneth’s friend David Bigham (age 75) joined us. David was a member of a group called The Roses who did backup vocals for Buddy Holly and Roy Orbison. He joined in the stories from the past…

I spent a very enjoyable two hours with Kenneth Broad and thank him for his hospitality as the studio is shown by appointment only.

Enjoying the interesting historic places is another joy in the life of a full-time RVer!

NOW SOME FINAL NEWS…

David provided me with Peggy Sue’s telephone number….yup, the one that Buddy Holly’s song is about. She currently lives in Lubbock, Texas and has agreed to meet with me when I arrive there in about a week or so. So I guess I’ve got a date with Peggy Sue!!! How about that.

Mary remains at home in California tending to medical issues.

The motorhome is still parked at Sumner Lake State Park. I expect to depart later this morning.

Six days ago I showed some photos of a crystal-clear pre-sunrise. Here’s yesterday morning’s pre-sunrise with some clouds…

As always you may left click upon an image to see an enlarged view and then click once again to see an even larger view…

Here’s a Google Earth image of Sumner lake. The pin indicates my camping location…

Yesterday morning I looked out of the dinette window about 10:00 AM to see a couple of four-point bucks walking by about 50 feet from the motorhome…

In the afternoon I walked about 1/4 of a mile to take a few photos of the lake…

A 180 degree panorama…

And finally walking back into my campground where I’m in space #1 on the left…

Enjoying the solitude peacefulness of a lake is another joy in the life of a full-time RVer!

America The Beautiful

October 27, 2012

The terrible accident we survived happened five months ago today, May 27th.

About 10 days ago I got to feeling well enough to finally stop wearing my elastic chest bandage, taking ibuprofen and icing my chest twice daily. My right rib cage remains slightly swollen and somewhat tender to the touch. I need to maintain a constant  awareness not to physically over exert myself. I remain with a constant mild burning sensation in my right rib cage area. I’m wondering when, if ever, it will finally leave me.

Mary remains at home in California tending to medical issues. Some believed to be related to after effects of the accident.

If you missed the Blog entry about the accident, here’s the link. If you want to understand the full scope of the accident you’ll need to read the Blog entries for the following several days…
http://wp.me/pDCku-4Eh

In the meantime, I’m in my second day here at Sumner Lake State Park in New Mexico.

We have a brief cold front moving though the area. Yesterday’s high temperature was only 48 degrees so I stayed inside most of the day playing with the computer and came up with this 1:58 minute video. It was 30 degrees at 5:00 AM this morning.

The music America The Beautiful is by Christopher W. French. The photos, which I randomly selected, are from the states of Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Mississippi, Montana, New Mexico, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Texas, Tennessee and West Virginia (not shown in that order)…are mine. Yup, That’s me standing in front of the Post Office in Luckenbach, Texas…Y’all!

Mary remains at home in California tending to medical issues.

Yesterday I drove the motorhome from Santa Rosa Lake State Park the about 40 miles south to Sumner Lake State Park. I had a choice of two routes…rather straight boring road with lots of traffic or a back road. You know…like the road less traveled.

It was an unusual and unexpected drive. If you remember yesterday’s Blog entry, I took the same road into Puente de Luna and continued south on this nice newly repaved roadway…

As always you may left click upon an image to see an enlarged view and then click once again to see an even larger view…

A couple of miles beyond this point is when the surprises began. Either the New Mexico State Highway Department forgot to put up the sign or somebody stole the sign that said…WARNING PRIMITIVE ROAD NEXT 25 MILES.

The nice newly-repaved road ended on to long-ago paved road and within a couple of miles became washboarded dirt road…

It was decision time. Either I continue on or double-back about 20 miles to the straight boring road. Heck…I thought…I’m a veteran of a 2004, 343 day, 16,000+ mile RV trip through Mexico and Central America! How bad can this be? So I continued on out into the middle of nowhere. Bumping along between almost stopped on 10-15 miles per hour…

In its own way it was pretty, quiet and desolate country with a couple of bull ranches along the way…

The bulls took the motorhome passing lying down…like saying no big deal…we see dozens of motorhomes go by here every day! Truth is I did not see another vehicle moving or otherwise for 30 miles. It certainly was the road less traveled!!!

On and on I went…bumping and rattling along…

Until finally…two hours later I came to some long-ago pavement once again…

Shortly thereafter I came to Sumner Lake State Park…

Where, from the door of the motorhome, I have a peek-a-boo view of the lake…

Finally, I always like to show the view from the dinette window…

Other than the washboarded road…it was a very pleasant journey on the road less traveled. The 40 mile trip took me a total of three hours. Do the math! I expect to depart here this coming Sunday.

So much for my $50 wash-job on the motorhome and Bronco less than 10 days ago. Such is life! It’s a lousy job but someone’s got to do it!  :)

Mary remains at home in California tending to medical issues.

The motorhome is currently parked at Santa Rosa Lake State Park, about 125 miles east of Albuquerque. I expect to leave here tomorrow.

Monday I took the Bronco into Santa Rosa to do laundry. I took some photos along the way…

As always you may left click upon an image to see an enlarged view and then click once again to see an even larger view…

Here’s what the view from the top of the dam looks like…

Santa Rosa is on Historic Route 66. In 1937 it was re-aligned…meaning the route was changed. Santa Rosa remains as the original Route 66. This sign verifies that fact…

Here’s a photo of a very famous railroad bridge as seen looking north on the Pecos River from the Route 66 roadway bridge. If you saw the movie The Grapes of Wrath…Tom Joad (Henry Fonda) looks at this bridge as the train crosses over inspiring him to head West.

I took the opportunity to re-watch The Grapes of Wrath last night. Immediately after the train scene, there are scenes in a gas station and a diner which according to the Internet were also shot in Santa Rosa, but not identified as such, Whereas the train scene actually shows the sign for the Pecos River as it crosses the Route 66 roadway bridge…

The Pecos River looking south from the Route 66 roadway bridge…

Other views from around town…

The Great Adventure Dinette Window Photos…Update #2…

Back on November 29, 2011, I began what is my 6th circumnavigation of the United States. It will be Mary’s 2nd.

I’m calling it The Great Adventure, because it’s different from my other five circumnavigations…in which the routes were kinda-sorta preplanned. This time…with the exceptions of attending my oldest grand-daughter’s high school graduation in June 2013 in southeastern Connecticut…I don’t know where were will be going or when we will be there! Hence…The Great Adventure.

The only plan is to live a day-to-day lifestyle and let the wind blow us where it may!

Another thing different about this circumnavigation…in addition to our daily Blog entries documenting our experiences…is in every overnight parking spot I’ve decided to take a photo out of our dinette window.

For instance here’s the view out of our dinette window when we parked at the Dancing Eagle Casino RV Park, Casa Blanca, New Mexico…

As always you may left click upon an image to see an enlarged view and then click once again to see an even larger view...

During the course of this two-year circumnavigation I’m expecting that we will park overnight in somewhere between 250 and 500 locations. In addition you need to know that when I park the motorhome…I do not say to myself…where’s the best view? It is strictly by chance what view ends up outside of our window.

You need also to remember that we overnight a lot at free locations such as Eagles and Moose Clubs, the American Legion and VFW. Free is good but the views are not always spectacular…but usually somewhat interesting.

Finally I started taking these photos once we departed Yuma, Arizona. Prior to that time all the previous overnight parking locations are repeats from previous times since I travel those routes somewhat regularly.

With that said, I’ve got 47 out-of-the-dinette-windows collected so far. You can see them all by clicking the below link. Once there, click the slide show button…
https://picasaweb.google.com/110455945462646142273/GreatAdventureDinetteWindowPhotos#

After viewing the 47 photos I think you’ll agree that the full-time RVing lifestyle exemplifies the saying of “Variety Is The Spice Of Life”! The constant changing of scenery, people, local foods and music is most stimulating. I never tire of it!

I intend to post this Blog entry periodically as The Great Adventure rolls along..

It will be fun to look at the 250 to 500 photos that will finally end up in this collection when the circumnavigation has been completed!

Enjoying a variety of people, places and experiences is another joy in the life of a full-time RVer!

2011-2013 – 6th Circumnavigation Of The USA…Update #4

This Blog posting…which I will post from time-to-time…will be used to present my/our travels on this almost two-year circumnavigation of the United States…my 6th…Mary’s 2nd. During these circumnavigations, I try to travel on roads I’ve not seen before…I’m about 90% successful in that regard.

The only things I know about our potential destinations during this upcoming adventure is that I/we plan to spend a good portion of 2012 exploring the State of New Mexico. In 2013 we’re planning to attend my oldest grand-daughter’s high school graduation in June in southeastern Connecticut. Other than that…we’ll just have to find out one-day-at-a-time where our fates will send us.

The trip began from Murphys, California on November 29, 2011 with 35,956.5 miles on the motorhome odometer. In addition to showing the route taken, I intend to also document where I/we parked during this journey. My guess is that within the about next 700+ days we will park in about 250+ different places.

Here’s the map so far which you may click on to see in a larger view…
