Saulsbury, Tennessee – Day 1
April 25, 2013
Things do not always work out as planned.
Yesterday I took Mary for a second acupuncture appointment at 9:30 AM…that part worked out okay. When we returned to the motorhome at VFW Post #10567 at Southaven, Mississippi, I found a note on our door indicating I needed to come inside and talk to the Bartender. She informed me the city had called and said we had stayed too long and that we needed to leave…NOW…or they would be fined. Not wanting that to happen…we left.
A day earlier than I had planned, I ended up driving the motorhome the about 75 miles east to Thousand Trails Cherokee Landing RV Resort near Saulsbury, Tennessee. We are Thousand Trails members and you can read about this resort by clicking this link…

Here’s the view from the dinette window…
Through the windshield we have a peek-a-boo view of the small lake…
It’s pretty, peaceful and quiet here. Our current plans are to leave here on Monday. After a hectic week in the Memphis area, we need a bit of a rest.
Enjoying pretty, peaceful and quiet places is another joy in the life of a full-time RVer!

On October 27, 2012, I created a two-minute video titled America The Beautiful. The music America The Beautiful is by Christopher W. French. The photos, which I randomly selected, are from the states of Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Mississippi, Montana, New Mexico, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Texas, Tennessee, Washington and West Virginia (not shown in that order)…are mine. Yup, That’s me standing in front of the Post Office in Luckenbach, Texas…Y’all!

Southaven, Mississippi – Day 10
April 24, 2013
The motorhome is still parked at VFW Post #10567 in Southaven, Mississippi. The location is about 1/4 mile south of the Tennessee Border and about 10 miles south of the City of Memphis. We are now expecting to depart from here tomorrow.
Yesterday I drove the Bronco the about 10 miles to downtown Memphis where we visited the Mud Island River Park. You can read all about this place by clicking this Wikipedia link…

As always you may left click upon an image to see an enlarged view and then click once again to see an even larger view…
Although you can drive on to Mud Island by car, we elected to take the about 1/2 mile trip by a tram-car…
All throughout our day on Mud Island we saw lots of neat old photos and paintings…
Looking down upon a small portion of the River Walk. It’s 2,000 feet long and you can read all about it by clicking this link…
http://www.mudisland.com/c-14-riverwalk.aspx
Down on the ground along the River Walk…
At the southern end of the River Walk is this nice fountain…
The Interstate Highway 40 Bridge crossing the Mississippi River as seen from Mud Island…
Then we went into the museum which is comprised of 18 galleries that showcase 10,000 years of history in the Lower Mississippi River Valley. The exhibits detail early inhabitants in the valley to modern-day transportation and contain over 5,000 artifacts; including two full size boat replicas which you can board and explore…
And back to the Bronco after another nice day…
Enjoying interesting places and museums is another joy in the life of a full-time RVer!

Southaven, Mississippi – Day 9
April 23, 2013
The motorhome is still parked at VFW Post #10567 in Southaven, Mississippi. The location is about 1/4 mile south of the Tennessee Border and about 10 miles south of the City of Memphis. We are now expecting to depart on Thursday.
Yesterday I drove the Bronco the about 10 miles to downtown Memphis. First stop was at the famous Peabody Hotel. You can read all about this hotel and the equally famous Peabody Ducks by clicking This Wikipedia link…
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peabody_Hotel
In general, photography conditions were terrible with harsh mid-day sun, dim lighting and deep shadows. Nonetheless here are some of the photos that I took yesterday…
As always you may left click upon an image to see an enlarged view and then click once again to see an even larger view…
Up to the rooftop…
Back inside…
The red carpet has been rolled out in readiness for the 11:00 AM March of the Peabody Ducks. They are brought down from their penthouse suite via elevator and march (actually it was more of a dash) on the red carpet to the fountain where they swim until 5:00 PM and then they are returned to their suite…
The Duckmaster explains the history and tradition of the duck march. You read of it in the above Wikipedia link…
I thought I made a video of this grand event…but when I went to look for it…it wasn’t there. Next time I’ll put on my glasses to make sure I properly push the start video button. Sorry about that! Anyways, here’s the five Mallard Ducks swimming in the fountain…
As I mentioned the ducks come down by elevator…
Before we moved on, Mary had to visit the gift shops…
From the hotel, famous Beale Street is only a couple of blacks away. The “famous” portion of Beale Street is only three blocks long. You can read all about Beale Street by clicking this Wikipedia link…
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beale_Street_%28Memphis,_Tennessee%29
We had lunch at The Flying Fish just off Beale Street where I had a grilled chicken salad…

We sat at the Liar’s Wall… (fisherman’s exaggerated stories about their catches)
Another enjoyable day!

Southaven, Mississippi – Day 8
April 22, 2013
The motorhome is still parked at VFW Post #10567 in Southaven, Mississippi. The location is about 1/4 mile south of the Tennessee Border and about 10 miles south of the City of Memphis. We are now expecting to depart on Thursday.
Yesterday I drove the Bronco the about 10 miles to downtown Memphis. We arrived at Sun Studio, the self-proclaimed Birthplace of Rock ‘n’ Roll. It was here that Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins and others made their famous early musical recordings. You can read all about the history of Sun Studio by clicking this Wikipedia link…
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sun_Studio
In general, photography conditions were terrible. Outside…harsh sunlight. Inside…darkish with mini spotlights and just about everything worth photographing was covered with plastic or glass making for lots of reflection. Then…also, there were lots of people to get in the way. Nonetheless…here are some of the photos that I took…
As always you may left click upon an image to see an enlarged view and then click once again to see an even larger view…
The original Sun Studio through which this door these folks entered both before they were and after they became famous…
The sign in front of the above building…
The attached building housing the gift shop, administrative offices and museum area…
These photos are on the outside of the above building…
We arrived at 10:00 AM hoping there would be few people for the first tour at 10:30 PM…not! This is where you buy your tour tickets…in the gift shop…
A real-live Honky Tonk Angel. At least that’s what it says on her chest…
Our tour guide was to be Lahna Deering…a musician still seeking international fame. She proved to be a bubbly and knowledgeable personality. You can listen to some of her music and find out all about her and her partner by clicking their official website link…
http://deeringanddown.com/fr_home.cfm
Time for the tour at last. Heading into the museum area I made it a point to be first in line so I could shoot a photo with no people in the way…
Sam Phillips was the owner of Sun Studio at that time…
In addition to explaining the museum’s exhibits, Lahna played us some partial early Sun Studio recordings…
She told us that originally Sun Studio was called the Memphis Recording Service…
Time to now go to the original recording studio area. This is what the reception area looked like back then…
Through the door into the studio where once again Lahna played more early recordings for us…
Using (supposedly) the same microphone that was used by Elvis…Mary belts out a tune…
Back to the gift shop area…
Then outside where a waiting shuttle bus was delivering a new load and waiting for departing tourists…
It proved to be an interesting visit despite the crowd. I would have preferred it to be like my tour through the Norman Petty Recording Studio in Clovis, New Mexico where Buddy Holly, Waylon Jennings and others made their early recordings. On that tour I was the only person because Clovis is out in the middle of nowhere rather than a large city like Memphis. If you missed that Blog entry…here’s the link…

Here’s the link to the museum…

After our time at Sun Studio, Mary’s neck started bothering her again so we called it a day. Must have been belting out that tune that did it!

Southaven, Mississippi – Day 7
April 21, 2013
The motorhome is still parked at VFW Post #10567 in Southaven, Mississippi. The location is about 1/4 mile south of the Tennessee Border and about 10 miles south of the City of Memphis. We will stay here while we explore the Memphis area for the next few days.
In yesterday’s Blog entry I indicated that Mary had a second appointment set with the acupuncturist for 9:00 AM. By 8:00AM she was feeling improved to the point that she called and cancelled. So, off we went for a day of sight-seeing. I happy to tell you she was smart enough to wear her neck support collar and she apparently made it through four hours of sight-seeing with no ill effects.
I drove the Bronco the about 10 miles to downtown Memphis. We arrived at the Lorraine Motel and National Civil Rights Museum at 10:00 AM. You can read about both of these places by clicking this Wikipedia link…
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lorraine_Motel
It was on the balcony in front of room #306 that Martin Luther King, Jr. was assassinated on April 4, 1968. You can read about that event by clicking this Wikipedia link…
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Assassination_of_Martin_Luther_King%2C_Jr.
We knew the would be a large crowd on a Saturday morning, so we went to the motel before the museum. Here are some of the photos that I took…
As always you may left click upon an image to see an enlarged view and then click once again to see an even larger view…
King was standing on a spot directly behind where a white wreath hangs today…
The predictable interior of room #306 as shot through the window…
Standing on the exact spot where King was assassinated, I took this photo across Mulberry Street. The large opening in the lower right of the concrete wall is the entrance to the museum. James Earl Ray fired the fatal shot from the small bathroom window on the right directly under the metal chimney…
A portion of a nearby sign describing the event…
King’s car…
Another nearby sign…
With a photo showing James Earl Ray’s view. You can see several people on the second floor balcony center right…
Proceeding across the street we entered the museum…
The Saturday morning crowd as seen from the second floor of the museum…
A photo of the then bathroom where James Earl Ray stood in the bathtub to fire the fatal shot…
The bathroom today as seen through protective plexiglass…
The museum presents a very detailed story of the assassination and the hunt for and capture of James Earl Ray…
Along with associated civil rights stories…
A close-up view of the outside of the small bathroom window…
We spent two hours at this very interesting museum.
Then out we went to walk along the South Main Street Arts District…
The Arcade Restaurant is the oldest eatery in Memphis. Elvis Presley reputedly hung out here…
The entrance to Ernestine and Hazel’s..a once-upon-a-time sundry store. For over 100 years it served as a bar/grill and brothel…
Heading up the stairs to the second floor brothel…
Note the red light hanging off of the ceiling…
Heading back down to the first floor…
Back out on to South Main Street…
Looking north on South Main Street. Beale Street, which we will visit soon is about one mile up the street…
Ernestine and Hazel’s as seen from across the street…
The interior of the Arcade Restaurant…
A unique carriage…
Ernestine and Hazel’s as seen from directly across the street…
We spent an enjoyable two hours along South Main Street. More of Memphis today…

Mary had another neck painful day yesterday…so we decided to stay home. But she need to make copies of some legal paperwork…so we had to go out for that task.
First, we went through our closets to identify seldom worn or tight-fitting clothed for donation to Goodwill…
As always you may left click upon an image to see an enlarged view and then click once again to see an even larger view…
Ready at last…off we went. Along the way we passed Don’s Speed Shop with a number of seldom seen vehicles in the lot…so naturally we stopped to take photos…
Upon returning and by the end of the day, Mary decided she wanted a second acupuncture treatment and phoned to make an appointment. That’s where we will be at 9:00 AM this morning. She’s hoping that will take care of her neck pain.

Southaven, Mississippi – Day 4
April 18, 2013
The motorhome is now parked at VFW Post #10567 in Southaven, Mississippi. The location is about 1/4 mile south of the Tennessee Border and about 10 miles south of the City of Memphis. We will stay here while we explore the Memphis area for the next several days.
Yesterday was once again both hot and humid. About 85 degrees and % humidity. The Weather Wimp…as Mary calls me, says… Triple Yuk!!!
Mary decided she wanted to see an acupuncturist to try to relieve her pain. Due to faulty instructions and poor signage it took about 1.5 hours and 50 miles of driving to find him. She had about a one hour treatment. Returning directly to the motorhome still took 50 minutes and 24 miles. By time we returned it well after 1:00 PM and because it was so hot and humid didn’t feel like doing any sightseeing. We spent the afternoon and evening sitting in our chairs outside and reading.
She got a good night’s sleep and this morning is indicating she’s feeling noticeably better.
Since our little activity day, I’ve only got three photos for today. The first two are of the beautiful memorial here at VFW Post #10567 in Southaven, Mississippi…
As always you may left click upon an image to see an enlarged view and then click once again to see an even larger view…
and finally a photo attesting to yesterday’s heat and humidity…

Southaven, Mississippi – Day 3
April 17, 2013
The motorhome is now parked at VFW Post #10567 in Southaven, Mississippi. The location is about 1/4 mile south of the Tennessee Border and about 10 miles south of the City of Memphis. We will stay here while we explore the Memphis area for the next several days.
Yesterday was both hot and humid. About 85 degrees and % humidity. The Weather Wimp…as Mary calls me, says…Yuk!!!
I drove the Bronco the about seven miles to meet Mary at the Memphis Airport. She arrived at 6:00 PM. She was in a condition of which I have not seen her before. A few days ago she re-arranged her living room furniture and a couple of days later ended up with a very painful neck…and cannot lift anything…
As always you may left click upon an image to see an enlarged view and then click once again to see an even larger view…
She got a good night’s sleep and feels somewhat better this morning. As I write this, she thinks she will call an acupuncturist first thing this morning and try to get an appointment asap. One thing we have both noticed is that she tends to feel physically better on the road in the motorhome than at her home in California. Hopefully she will soon be up and jumping around again.
It was so hot in the motorhome when we returned that we sat outside enjoying a nice breeze and watched a hazy sunset…
In addition to hopefully get an acupuncture appointment, we need to get her unpacked and moved back in and probably do a little grocery shopping. Hopefully by tomorrow she’ll feel well enough to start doing a little sightseeing.

Southaven, Mississippi – Day 2
April 16, 2013
The motorhome is now parked at VFW Post #10567 in Southaven, Mississippi. The location is about 1/4 mile south of the Tennessee Border and about 10 miles south of the City of Memphis. We will stay here while we explore the Memphis area for the next several days.
Mary returns to me today. I’ll meet her at the airport at 6:00 PM.
Yesterday I ventured less than five miles into Tennessee. I went to the Memphis Visitors Center to pickup maps and brochures for things we may want to see and do while in the area. It’s interesting what happened. Crossing the state line and the slow southern way of life seem to disappear. Back into traffic and noise immediately. Hmmm….
The below Google Earth image shows my relative location to the Memphis area. The V is the location of VFW Post #10567 where I am currently parked. The red line indicates the Tennessee/Mississippi Border…
As always you may left click upon an image to see an enlarged view and then click once again to see an even larger view…
Shortly thereafter I was back in Mississippi and spent about three hours going to thrift and used book stores to replenish my dwindling supply of books. I saw something I have never seen before…a Goodwill Bookstore. It’s part of the Goodwill system…but at this store they sell only books. It was neat and clean and all the books are sorted by author which made it very pleasant to shop there. I bought several books…
I forgot to show you a photo I took while at the Delma Firmiss Hospitality Center at Lula, Mississippi a couple of nights ago. It was taken at midnight through the passenger-side windshield. I thought it made for a neat photo…
Today’s activities are expected to include…get a haircut…do laundry and pickup Mary.
Here’s (I guess) an interesting side note. The On The Road With Jim And Mary Blog has just passed the 2,000 followers mark. Current number is at 2,022. Thanks to all of you who follow along the road of life with us. We enjoy sharing our experiences with you vicariously.
Here’s another side note…
RVTravel.com publishes several Blogs that offer news, information and tips about the RVing World…all for free! In yesterday’s RV Daily Tips Issue 101, On The Road With Jim And Mary was identified as Website of the Day. You can see that issue by clicking this link…
