MEMORIAL DAY SERVICE
May 28, 2013
Camp Hostess, Pam, arranged for a Memorial Day Service at the entrance gate. The VFW came earlier than planned, gave their 21 gun salute and left before any one had a chance to gather. She explained there had been a snafu about timing. She read a script about honoring those who served and invited any veterans to speak to the crowd.
This woman, a veteran herself, has two sons in the military.
This veteran spoke and saluted.
This woman spent 20 years in the military.
Jim got up and surprised himself; he got choked up and could hardly speak.
Following the pledge of allegiance and a song, My Country T’is Of Thee, the parade of decorated golf carts made their way to the Family Center.
Then the walkers followed the golf carts.
This family joined the walkers.
I’m so anti-war. Most of the invasions we’ve made on behalf of our government are in support of some corporate economic issue rather than defense of our country. The money spent on war could be put to such better use. But, make no mistake, being anti-war does not mean I don’t support our troops. I believe we should reinstate the draft and let all socioeconomic groups be responsible for military service and readiness.
Bottom line, for me, Memorial Day is remembering our troops, those who served and those who fell. It is not un-American to disapprove of war.
We are parked at Thousand Trails Hershey RV Resort at Lebanon, Pennsylvania. We will move along later this morning.

Yesterday was sunny and 75 degrees…the first nice day we have had in a long time. More thunderstorms forecast for today.
Yesterday was also Memorial Day. In the activities schedule we received when we arrived, it said for yesterday…
10:00 AM – Memorial Day Celebration at the Flag Pole (ranger station). The veterans Campbelltown VFW will be here to perform the Ceremony with a 21 gun salute, followed by our Parade, Golf Carts, Bicycles and Walkers. Sounds good we said to each other…let’s attend!
I returned from my walk at 9:15 and shortly thereafter heard three rounds of rifle fire…looked out the window and saw the seven vets saluting the flag. What the heck? Come to find out there was a communication gap between the vets and the park. They came early and had to move on for other obligations. At 10:00 AM we went to the ranger station and this is what we saw…

Assistant Manager Pam explained the communication problem, apologized for the mix-up and said we would have the remainder of the program anyways. She read a piece about the flag, we said the Pledge of Allegiance and sang My Country ‘Tis Of Thee…
After the ceremonies were complete, she asked if any of the veterans would like to speak. Four of us did…
When my turn, I thanked everyone for attending and for remembering the special meaning of the day. Then the parade started…
Due to our physical situations, we did not walk the parade route…
The remainder of our day involved reading, some computer time and napping. We hope you had a nice Memorial Day.

One Year Ago…Today…
May 27, 2013
Happy Memorial Day. Freedom is not free. If you love your freedom…thank a Vet!
The motorhome is parked at Thousand Trails Hershey RV Resort in Lebanon, Pennsylvania. We expect to depart tomorrow morning.
One year ago today at about 12:45 PM in Canyon de Chelly in remote northeastern Arizona, Mary and I survived a terrible accident.
Neither of us are the same person as before the accident…we move a lot slower now.
I remain suffering from a still slightly swollen rib cage with a constant mild burning sensation. In addition I suffer with a mild constant pain in my right hip. Mary is still suffering from an assortment of items including headaches, sore neck, back and hip. One person was killed at the scene and several were severely injured.
Here are a few of the photos that you will see in the below Blog entries…

As much as I hate the thought…I expect all future Memorial Day weekends will find me reliving the horrific accident at Canyon de Chelly in 2012. On the other hand, I can be thankful that Mary and I did in fact survive that terrible accident and live to tell about it. Like it says on my Bronco license plate…1DAAT…One Day At A Time! It’s the only way to go.
Enjoying traveling with no accidents is another joy of the full-timing lifestyle!

SIX MILLION RV’S ON THE ROAD.
May 26, 2013
Memorial Day is tomorrow. We read where there are an estimated six million rv’s on the road for this three-day holiday. Jim has a philosophy, and that is to hunker down somewhere for popular holidays and stay off the road. We spent Thursday night at an American Legion in Dillsburg, PA. We saw bunches of vets with motorcycles headed for various parades and festivities honoring vets. Friday morning, he drove through another rain storm to bring us to a Thousand Trails in Hershey, PA.
I took a couple of barn pictures between raindrops.
.
I compared the beauty of the land to this painting from the Shenandoah Valley Museum. The same general area.
And this painting. An unusual boat for American waters. I’ve never seen any thing like it.
It was beastly cold and we stayed in and read and did computer chores most of the day. A short walk away, ducks were so cold we thought at first they were decoys; their heads tucked under wings.
Then, yesterday, we did our laundry and walked to the visitors center for a look around. The pool opened for the season, but I wasn’t up to braving the cold. We looked through the library and traded books we’ve read for some we haven’t. I’m walking slowly, so Jim took an evening walk by himself.
I’m reading an excellent book entitled My Dream Of You by Nuala O’Faolain. O’Faolain returns to her native Ireland to dig up a story of an aristocratic family during the potato famine. I’m French/Irish and it reminds me that there was genocide in Ireland during that horrific period. Living on the road for months at a time, gives me the luxury of reading good books as well as my trash novels, and I love it.
Jaime’s #1!
May 29, 2010
Jim says:
Jaime is my nine-year-old grand-daughter and she’s also a real firecracker! She’s a fourth-grader at the Essex Elementary School in Centerbrook, Connecticut.
The fourth, fifth and sixth-graders…a total of 250+ students…recently all submitted What Memorial Day Means To Me poems in competition. And guess who was #1???? That’s right…our own Jaime!
She did a professional job of reading her poem to the large crowd.
Here’s some photos…

Jaime really liked the Mardi Gras beads we brought her.

Jaime while waiting for the school bus yesterday.

The Memorial Day Flag Raising Ceremony Program.

These students were part of the 500+ people in attendance.

The Essex Elementary School Band has 100+ members.

Jaime reading her poem to the 500+people crowd.
A very proud day for her, her parents and her Grandpa…That’s me!
Later it was time for a late afternoon baseball game…

Play Ball!

Jaime playing third base.

Jaime catching.
What a girl!
